VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

I've been considering getting something like a Luxo KM1 interior spring mic arm, or a Rode PSA1, but the only pictures I've seen of them are clamped on to a desk. I don't have a desk in my booth and was wondering if anyone had one mounted on their wall instead. Anyone have something set up like that?

hi scott - i've been thinking about that too - you could get one of these:

and mount, i would think, just about any boom arm to it. you might have to offset it from the wall a bit to get the pivot you need, though.

or - if you're like me - you'll find a hunk of angle iron, weld a bushing to it and you're good to go.

i've also considered hanging my mic from the ceiling. that could work too.

Thanks for that. That appears to be a real possibility...minus the welding (at least by me). By offsetting it from the wall, do you mean that this would be attached to a block of some kind, with the block then attached to the wall?

Hanging from the ceiling? I'd like to see a setup like that if someone has it too. One of the reasons for me wanting to do this was to free up a little more space in my 4x4 booth and get that mic stand out of the way.

yes, a block of wood, but if you're not moving the mic very far - laterally - you might not need the spacer at all.

as far as a ceiling mount goes - i was just thinking about getting one of these:

and a piece of pipe threaded on both ends (i think it's 5/8"/27) and screw the shock mount right to it.

To the list of "must have" items that includes duct tape and WD-40, I would add a length of 2x4. I made a simple mount that screws through the sheet-rock onto a stud. Simply take two (one 6", one 4") lengths of 2x4 and make an "L" shape with the short bit as the base. Use a couple of 3" 90-degree metal strips in the elbow as well as a couple of screws so the thing is rigid, invert and screw to wall. Voila! The thickness of the 2x4 is perfect for the desk clamp bracket and you can have it anywhere on the wall (although I would say fixing it to a stud is the way to go).

I had mine mounted on the wall, but I wanted some more flexibility (I have a PSA1). I ended up getting a standard boom mic stand, taking the boom arm off, and just setting the stub end of the PSA1 into the hole that was left.

Really depends on your room though. If you're in a 4x4 booth, it's probably not necessary, and space is at a premium. I'm in a room, so I can sit down, stand up, and move the mic around if I need to.

Scott, I've got a Heil SB-2 (http://www.heilsound.com/amateur/products/booms.php), attached to a Heil RS-1 (http://www.heilsound.com/amateur/products/hardware/), which hangs from the ceiling of my booth.

I did it that way in order to save space in there, and it works really well.

So you don't have a spring arm at all then, just a short boom attached, is that right? I'm thinking I'll still like something adjustable for shorter people (that is, my kids) who would also be using it.

(edited to add:) Looking at their offerings though, it looks like a WM-1 holding a PL2T would work very nicely for that.

Well, my son's 10, and the SB-2 has plenty of range to get it low enough for him to use (standing).

Plus, the SB-2 (9 1/4", extendable to 18") is a LOT smaller than the PL2T (21 3/4)", which looks like it would really limit you in terms of mic placement in such a small space.

(Hard to explain, but since the main arm of the PL2T is so long, it'd almost force you to have the mic in the middle of a 4x4 booth, leaving you very little space. With the SB-2, on the other hand, the mic can be tucked back towards the corner pretty well, leaving more open space in front of it.)
