According to RadioWorld.com, Verizon has clarified the changes that will take place in just a couple of weeks for ISDN customers.

ISDN service will continue for those who already have it.

Verizon will continue to provide service for existing ISDN customers "over Centrex lines," and "have no plans at this time to make any changes." However, as we learned several weeks ago, no new accounts, moves, adds, or other changes will be offered after May 18. ISDN service has been offered over Centrex lines in some areas for some time, but I do not know if this means anything will change for existing users.

Hold on, Mike--I'm confused..Maybe I'm not really understanding all the terms..but what does this line from the article mean:

Quote:
When ordering new ISDN lines from Verizon, station engineers would now ask for “Centrex ISDN BRI.”

Wait: I thought you couldn't order new lines..how can there if new ones if they're not providing new ones?

Verizon says they're still accepting orders until May 18.

However, based on my last dealing with them a few years ago, when I moved, it took them three months BEYOND their initial promise date to finally have everything done and working. I'd had ISDN service before moving here, but didn't have it until three months after I moved in because they repeatedly dropped the ball. So, yes, I lost a number of ISDN bookings thanks to them.

I say this for those considering ordering before May 18: they may promise, but there's a very good chance they will not deliver. I don't mean to imply they would purposely not follow through, but they have shown time and again that their inter-departmental communication leaves plenty to be desired and things far too easily slip through the cracks. And they have no trouble saying, "Oh, well."

Hmmm. The way this reads to me - and I know nothing about Centrex - is it appears there are 2 ways of delivering ISDN. Over business lines - copper - or over a system called Centrex. It seems to say there will be no new Business BRI service but there will be ISDN BRI over Centrex. What I'd like to know is - is this Centrex something we as individuals can get? In which locales? And at what price?

Melissa--

That's how I read it, too...and exactly what I was wondering. Initial online research suggests that it may cost a fortune if a one-man home-based business could even get it . It seems to be for businesses with at least 20 employees..

Centrex is actually older than ISDN. New York Telephone invented it in the 60s to switch calls in their Central Offices for businesses whose call capacity was too large to manage with their own attendant consoles on-site. It uses copper lines and does have digital capability, but since VoIP came along – like ISDN – it also is losing ground.

I'll guess what Verizon means is that any new ISDN orders will be fulfilled using existing Centrex facilities. More on Centrex here:

Yeah, looks like they are referring to their "PRI" service, which would be VERY expensive for a home, single user studio scenario.

I am SO glad I'm set for the install in Studio South this Wednesday!
(& so glad the seller & Attorney were gracious enough to allow me to install something in a house I don't own yet! Smile )

Fortunately for me, I already own the house where I'm getting my ISDN line installed. I just have to return some paperwork to Dave Immer and I'll be off and running.
