"Ok, so who are you?"

The question was asked so that I could establish my street cred.

Spin - I'm the voice of a number of major national and international ad campaigns. No. That's spin and it's a matter of opinion. Most VO people if challenged on spun stories will crash and burn.

Pitch - Oh now this is clever and very life insurance sales person. I'm a communication facilitator in the global media world used by major corporations to .... Even in an elevator the snores will be deafening.

Win - Find the fact that he or she values OR know it in the first place.

"If you watch TV or listen to commercial radio anywhere in the UK this weekend you'll hear me selling you carpets, flooring and beds"

In the grand scheme of things that's not very important but it's a fact he or she can hang onto. Why? Your career depends upon it.

The problem with the internet is that everyone picks up the marketing spin ideas and then they spin thmeselves and potential clients until they throw up. We need to unbundle.

New way of doing things - Amish Marketing. Basic idea is to "come out from among them and be ye separate".

Spin or pitch - You think you're fooling the people who count ...That's the thing ...You THINK you're fooling them and you ain't.

Self-aggrandizement seems to have become the norm in many fields. It's all part of the "fake it until you make it" ethos which is (at best) not good business practice, and (at worst) just plain lying. It is unfortunate that most "normal" people see anyone who works in media as "cool & hip"... someone who does something important that's a million miles from their own humdrum life. There is an urge to feed the myth (who doesn't want to look cool?) but it's dangerous... we may start believing our own bs and then use the same line on colleagues who know better.

If a "civilian" asks me what they've heard me in, my standard answer is that it's highly doubtful that they've heard anything of mine. If they press, I'll give a couple of boring examples... pick your examples well and you'll stop being the aspirational figure that they want you to be. Trap avoided. Obviously, if you know the person is in the industry and is asking a genuine question, then a succinct, straight answer (with no bs) is the best one (Philip's "Win" point below).

All that being said, what we do is pretty cool though, innit?

And unfortunately, there seems to be an equally strong urge to buy into that myth. So much so that some vo "coaches" have even written articles and posted videos on Youtube, using "Fake it Till You Make It" in the title.

One of those "coaches" even goes so far as to encourage newbies to be evasive when clients ask about their VO experience. (And by "encourage," I mean: providing them with the exact wording to use in order to avoid the question and change the subject, in hopes that the client won't ask again.)

Yeah, it's not as if voiceovering is really important, like, say, being on TV or in the movies. Rolls Eyes

Peter, it's in instances like this that I'm glad to be raised with humility at the fore. I just can't toot my own horn in this fashion, it feels odd and disturbing.

Here's something I keep asking myself when I hear about people touting their achievements and skill: would I rather the listener expect greatness as soon as I am about to perform, or would it be more exciting if the performance was great?

Strong dislike for 'pitch' people. I have few things in common with them, and find myself waiting for the surface to crack.
