OK, to be fair, I've done very little promo work, but like most of us in the business I've listened to thousands of promos with a fairly educated ear, so....
my thoughts are, yes, you still sound kinda radio, kinda slow paced, and kinda stretching the words out, all part of the same radio package. If I were pursuing this line of work I would go to voicebank.net (maybe other sites too) and find all the promo demos I could and listen until my ears bled and mimic until my lips cracked. Then listen to my stuff compared to the promo champs... judge how I'm doing, and then decide to practice more, or stick with the things I do well. Of all the fields out there promos and trailers are the most competitive and you've got to be close to ace quality if you want in.
I hate to recommend this, but if you want to get more of the feel for this, track down some of Joe Cipriano's videos of his sessions. You'll get an idea of the speed and energy required by many.
If you've got a little money to burn there are also promo coaches out there.

Bruce,
Thank you so much, I know I can count on you for voluminous volumes of expert advice. It’s so true; I get off the session with my coach and slide back into the radio push thing. Excellent advice on watching the JOE videos, he makes it look so easy, and I have downloaded most of the top promos off VoiceBank. One thing that putting all the promos together, is that they each have a signature sound as well as Delivery…but my delivery sounds the same for each network. I know that I must work on the distinction between the network signatures.
Also I did the practice prior to my coaching session, went back and even said wow…the information I gleaned from todays session has provided the ability to hear what I have done wrong. We worked on one specific one that I did on the practice, that I left intact know that it was wrong after the session. But If I change it, that would have been cheating.

Too big! That describes what I heard. For TV promos all you're saying is "Look" so people look and you then follow up with a suggestion to watch the entire broadcast.
1 - Look!
2 - Why?
3 - Ok then, so when and where?
Now, that makes sense in my head. Happy to talk to you about it if that would help.
I think I did my first TV promo session in 1994 and my most recent this morning, the latter for CNBC. |

Philip,
You are so right, I understand what you are saying. Following the rules of Who, What, When, Where, Why, and HOW! So true.
Thank you.
