Hey Boston-area gang,

I will be giving the presentation at Boston Post Mortem in Waltham Wednesday night (the 15th). Boston Post Mortem is a monthly meetup of game development guys.
The Skellig in Waltham
240 Moody Street at the corner of Crescent Street
7pm

2nd — I am trying to garner a candidacy for the SAG/AFTRA New England Local Board. This process starts like many, and I need signatures on my nominating petition. Anyone who is in the New England Local can sign my petition.

Because I am in East Jesus, Maine, I may need to email petitions to people. I am trying to ascertain if I may receive scans of signed petitions. The election rules assume everyone running is rubbing shoulders with members all the time.
The upshot here is I am looking for support among union members here— people who are part of the New England Local. I know the political impact of this run— it's like looking down the barrel of a rifle. But since my "other plans" were blown to smithereens in August, I might as well pick up a cross.
I want to see if I can help shine a light onto the way the work is being done outside the cities.
And I'd really like to do more than just complain.
So reply here or email me or whatever and I will thank you heartily for your help and support.
The following is something I posted on Facebook and may use in my "campaign statement".

Quote:

I hope my "coming from the trenches" approach will help me win a seat on the board. Right now, I don't know if anyone "gets it".

Thanks to Melissa Exelberth, I understand that the union has the rules it does because of labor laws. But those laws and the strictures of the current "qualification" for union work do not apply to 99% of the work I do, and I can only imagine it's the same for anyone who is self-employed. There needs to be a way to create a true freelance wing of the union (or create an auxiliary wing) that doesn't run afoul of current labor laws, can oversee high-paying, non-wage union work, that allows the trench warriors access to the benefits of union membership, and can receive dues and payments to rightfully enrich the union treasury.

If the laws don't work for us, we must work to change the laws. Isn't that how MADD got started?

Your Facebook post got a large number of replies, so you might have missed mine. I'll repeat it here. I'm in the New England local and I'll be happy to sign your petition.

Congratulations Deebs! If anyone can make a difference you can. There aren't many in the union who understand how much VO has changed, moved on to different, more efficient methods of working. You can help them understand.

I was considering running in NY again but I don't think the timing is right for me right now. I'm SO glad you're doing this!

Thanks all and thanks very much Lee! — I may be able to email you a petition paper. I just need to see if you need to mail it back or can scan it and send it back via email.
I'll let you know.
