I ran across this a this morning, and it sounds pretty good to me so far. Spotdox allows you to remotely access your entire mac through Dropbox, and upload and download through iOS devices. I've read the terms of service completely and everything seems to be on the up-and-up. But, I'd like to get some opinions from others out here that use Dropbox as to it's safety and security before I login. So far, I can't find any negatives in my searches. (The a is free at this time).

Spotdox is a remote access program for Mac. It works with any smartphone, iOS or Android, as it works from the browser..... So, yes, Todd, you could access your mac from your Android....
I'm leery, however, of ANY remote access program. Security is security, and the most secure system is NOT exposed from the outside, especially with a backdoor.
Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, etc. are great for sharing files and accessing files on the go. With a little advance planning, you can have and share access to most anything you should need, safely.
No need to leave the back door open to enterprising visitors. _________________ Don Brookshire

I saw a report about it on MacWorld so I've installed it too. I don't have any iOS devices but I do have an old PowerBook I use when I'm on a trip, and supposedly it should work with any browser on any OS.
I'm hoping Steve Gibson will cover it on his "Security Now" podcast (I haven't heard this week's episode yet), but from how I understand the way the software works, it should be just as secure as Dropbox itself. _________________ Peter Katt

Here's what gave me cause for pause right from the get-go though. I downloaded the a to my desktop, and clicked on the icon. It knows my email address and asks permission to be connected to my Dropbox.
BUT... the second bullet point says, "Make sure you trust this a before giving permission." WTF? Maybe it's just a nice above-board way to build trust, but it I kinda made me think... _________________ "Dammit Jim, I'm a voice actor, not an audio engineer!"

Hey Peter...Do you (or anybody) know when/where I can find this next Security podcast you spoke of? I think I'd like to see this a addressed before I give it permission to do anything. _________________ "Dammit Jim, I'm a voice actor, not an audio engineer!"

I'm always paranoid on the security side too. For remote access I use TeamViewer because it gives me the ability to have two different passwords (one to get into my account, and the second to control my computer) and system filter (kinda like MAC filtering) so even if someone knows my password, they can't get in unless I have manually added their unique TeamViewer identifier to my "whitelist."
Really though, if someone REALLY wants to get into my system, they will...same with everyone else. But I don't have anything that is THAT confidential on my computer, so I don't think ultra mega hackers are gonna be trying that hard. |

Security Now is on Leo Laporte's TWiT network at http://twit.tv/sn
Audio archives and transcripts are on Steve Gibson's site at https://www.grc.com/securitynow.htm
It wasn't covered in this week's podcast, but next week is a Q&A so someone may ask about it. _________________ Peter Katt

Thanks for your reply Peter. Spotdox was featured in a recent Macworld article, and the author seemed to be very satisfied with the level of security in this a .
Beyond that, I can't find any negative commentary about the a in my Googling re: safety/security. I think I'm comfortable enough to give it a go. And, Jason makes a good point in that if someone really wants to hack anyone bad enough, I'm certain they can do it with or without the presence of Spotdox!
So let the spies at KAOS use the old "hacker-hiding-in-the-spotdox-a -trick," I'll take the gamble (famous last words). _________________ "Dammit Jim, I'm a voice actor, not an audio engineer!"

I just downloaded it. Running it on the MacPro, I'm able to get full access from my MacBook. This is nice. Unfortunately, I'm not having too much success with my iPhone... although the iPad seems to be just fine. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Excellent Bish! Glad to hear it's working well for you. I plan to give mine "the authorization" when I get home. I think this thing will come in handy from time to time! _________________ "Dammit Jim, I'm a voice actor, not an audio engineer!"
