So...this is just kinda cool.
Yesterday I posted a picture on FB of my mom in her French Army uniform.
Stephanie @ Voices saw it & asked whether I'd be willing to share her story for their blog sisnce it's Memorial Day weekend.
Why not!
So today, Maman is officially on the Interwebz!
I think it's kinda cool.
THIS is how I choose to remember her. _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!

Very cool, Liz! It's too bad she wasn't inclined to talk about the past much as I'm sure her stories would have been fascinating. _________________ Bob Ransom

Yeah...my father was the same way. I tried and do have some information, and will be seeing my Aunt (a cousin of my Dad's) in Vienna at the end of June...you KNOW I'll be picking her brain! _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!

There must be something about being Russian and the ability to learn so many languages, or maybe it was the free time people had back then with no electronic distractions. One of my great grandfathers came to the U.S. in the 1870s speaking 8 dialects of Russian, plus German, Polish and I'll have to look up what else again. He published small newspapers in those languages in Chicago back then so the immigrants could get their news.
Amazing people, those forbears.

Yeah. My father always said that the farther EAST you were, you learned all the languages to the WEST of you.
HE spoke: English, French, Hungarian, Russian, German, Italian, Spanish & Slovak. _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!

The town my grandfather came from was, at various times in its history, part of Russia, Poland or Lithuania. So despite having just an 8th grade education, he could speak Russian, Polish, Lithuanian, German, English, and probably a few others. After he came to this country, I'm pretty sure he put them all to use at one time or another, dealing with customers of various backgrounds in his furniture store. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
