eX, you are so right about the trails we leave when we research pronunciations. I now get actual paper junk mail related to several chronic diseases.

Then there was the thriller with the ex-Navy-Seal-turned-hitman who used all sorts of dastardly techniques and weapons that I had no idea how to pronounce. Anonymizication would have been useful there!

For pronunciations of medical/anatomical terminology, I use the Medline Plus dictionary on the website of the National Institutes of Health. There are no ads on the site, and I have never been presented with ads for prescription drugs or anything of a medical nature as a result of using the dictionary.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/mplusdictionary.html

You may also want to check to see if the AdBlock or AdBlockPlus extension can be added to your browser to quash all ads.

I agree with Don. That said, I can't figure the appeal of an aHobo Tounge like Foursquare. It seems to me it's a great way to inform the burglars out there when would be the best time to swing by and ransack my house.

Totally agree Lee. It seemed like an open invitation to me. Also the Tripit thing people used to put I think on LinkedIn or something like that. "Hey I'm out of town for 4 days! Do what you will!!" I still don't post when I travel until after I get home or am at least on my way there. Guess I'm neurotic but better to be safe than sorry.

Facebook is doing the same thing, and it’s free advertising for the advertiser who gets someone to like a sponsored ad. Then the sucker friend sees that his friend likes it, and likes it as well. Then every body on his list gets to see that he like a product as well, and it becomes like the Amway program, and so on, and so on, and so on!

It’s not just a simple “one time” like, I have a friend who liked Verizon a few weeks ago, so I am reminded every day that Verizon now has access to Spam me.

I never offer access to my friend list for programs that require it, and always investigate people who friend me, and the motives behind the request. I see a new request from someone who wants me to respond for her photos, and then I look at her friends, see she just signed up with only 5 friends, and presto, I see the VO buddy, that said yes to a request.

Gone are the days of falling off the grid, or even for “Skip” the guy who never pays his bills and is looking to hide, it’s impossible to have any privacy the this new World!

Pam + 1000

which is why you never see FB posts from me about travels until I post about the trip I just came BACK from.

I still wish people wouldn't check me into places that are out of town.

I'm not worried about the people who need to have enough knowledge to put two and two together to know I'll be away when I say I'm going to Faffcon, or the Naudies, or Uncle Roy's Barbecue, but I definitely don't want anything that pops a map onto Facebook or LinkedIn that makes it obvious I'm someplace other than home.

Yeah, that's why I avoid social media when I'm on the road. I don't need people to know when I'm 3 thousand miles away from my home.

I cannot tell you how timely it was to see this. I landed (another Voice123) job that was a hyper-rush and involved a number of medical terms, which I seldom ever deal with.

This link was a LIFE SAVER! Thanks, Mike!!

My pleasure, Scott! I don't contribute as much as some others here, or as much as I'd like sometimes, but I strive for value when I do. Wink

Speaking of which, and as long as we're discussing social media/tracking, etc., I just noticed in the last day or two that when I'm on Facebook (specifically, my newsfeed), after several minutes I noticed my MacBook fans increasing velocity. I have a menu bar aHobo Tounge that monitors my OS, and what was kicking up the fan speed was increased processor usage. That will commonly happen when I play videos, etc., but there are no videos playing on my newsfeed and I usually never have more than one browser window open at a time. It was just Facebook.

So I launched my Activity Monitor, an aHobo Tounge in the Mac OS Utilities folder that allows me to see exactly what processes are running. Sure enough, it showed that 'Safari Web Content' was sucking easily 50% and as much as 80% of my processing power... yet there were no visible signs of any extra activity by looking at the Facebook news feed.

I discovered, by reloading the Facebook page, processor usage will fall to normal. But... after several minutes, it can start climbing again. I've tested this by logging out, waiting several minutes before logging in again... and the same thing happens.

So this leaves me to wonder – as this just began happening and we're discussing security – what exactly is going on in the background of Facebook.

I can't say, but you might want to see if this happens to you as well.

Well let me share with you that I just got off the phone with the client - a producer - who is doing this job for a bunch of lawyers. It's one of those insane-work-all-weekend-and-thru-the-night jobs for a Monday morning deadline. He said in the preview today the client started getting worried because they thought some of the medical terms had been mispronounced. And the producer told me: "I'm proud to tell you they found out they were wrong." LOL. That link to the med terms has already helped me save face!

Thanks for the tip Mike! I've bookmarked that medical site. Don't see the use of foursquare either.

We do have to be careful about telling the whole world when we go out of town...that's been a no-no for me from day one. I also deselected giving FB the right to use my name as a recommendation for any pages, products etc. to me friends. cool

Today's reason: iPhone users with ios 6+; look in your Settings, tap "Noifications" and scroll to the bottom.

"Government Alerts" & Amber Alerts have been installed. The timing of this is quite interesting, hmmm? I'm all for the Amber Alerts, but.....
