any recommended (hopefully freeware) for extracting audio from DVD?

I am sure i found some before, but it has been a few years.

well - you could rip the DVD to .mp4 using Nero (or something) then open the .mp4 in adobe audition and pull the audio track.

i've never done it - but in theory it should work.

Any known shootouts, or personal experience?

Obviously not all codecs and conversion software are created equal.

Someone converted a few files for me (not sure which software they used). I appreciated the effort, but to be honest the quality of the audio is not so hot. Tried a couple of programs myself last year, but I don't remember any being satisfactory/

I can't imagine that playing them in real time (analog) and converting to digital is ideal, but I am stumped so far.

I just use HandBrake then open the video with TwistedWave and save in audio format of choice.
