A V123 lead today:
"We are creating a short video to promote the benefits of competency assessment to the laboratory.
Talent must be a US citizen, talent must be located in the US, talent must have a social security number to file taxes with, and must carry workers compensation insurance."
Why on earth would they need a voice talent to carry workmen's comp?
And do any of you folks carry it?
I've NEVER seen this required in a lead before.
Plus, I'm betting that none to almost none of the 32 folks who have auditioned so far carry it. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Typical government requirement list. I'm surprised they didn't require a pee test, too. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

In answer to your questions, Scott....
1) No reason whatsoever, unless you are an employer.
2) No, we don't. We're self-emloyed, and are therefore not required to do so.
3) Because they're idiots. (I know.... you didn't ask, but you were thinking it.) _________________ Don Brookshire

Scott,
Actually I do, but that's because Karen and Eric are both employees of my company; not just contractors. _________________ Be well,

gah, these bad memories of that client i've mentioned before who will remain anonymous but whose first letter begins with e, followed by bay:
they had me carry liability insurance ... when you stretch your imagination, i guess you could conclude why. those mic stands are dangerous, aren't they? _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

48 volts DC phantom power can be dangerous when you're in the shower, you know.
A number of years ago at a small ad agency I'd cofounded, the (in)significant other of one of the sales guys called one day and asked whether a half-pound of turkey weighed the same as a half-pound of ham. (absolutely true)
I was happy to have had workers compensation insurance then, because I almost wanted to slit my wrists. _________________ Mike

what weighs more: a half ton of feathers or a half ton of dirt? _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

The dirt, of course...feathers are really light.

Most business insurance providers now require that all contractors be covered by worker's comp. If you have a policy that covers you, good. If you don't, it's likely that the hiring company will have to cover you under their policy. In other words, it costs them money.
If you're being paid as a part-time employee, they'll have to cover you anyway.
So while it seems stupid (and it's pretty much impossible to get coverage unless you have employees; then their coverage extends to you), it's being driven by the insurance industry. I own a live event production company and my insurance company requires a list each year of all contractors hired, for what task, and whether they were covered by their own workers comp policy. Those that aren't covered get covered by me. (cha-ching!) So, yes, I ask that all contractors carry their own workers comp. _________________ Bob Ransom

The only pound to pound difference is between gold and other items. With similar containers holding each a pound of feathers and a pound of gold, the feathers weigh more. It's the "troy" ounce thing:
Quote: | "Gold is universally weighed using a different measurement system than most other materials. It is weighed using the troy system, and troy ounces. This system is measured so that 12 troy ounces makes up 5760 grains to the pound, while the common measurement for feathers would make them equal to 7000 grains to the pound. Thus, a standard pound of feathers technically weighs more than a pound of gold!" - from Authoritative Looking Site on the Internet |
Any way you measure it, I'd happily take a pound or two of gold right now.

While we're in the arena of barely useful knowledge, did you know that a bullet shot straight up into the air is very unlikely to kill you or even really hurt you? A bullet, which doesn't really weigh very much unless it's a really big one, coming back down meets all that air resistance and basically "flutters" on its way back to earth. It might smart a bit, but that's it.
Of course, a bullet shot more horizontally is a different story.

Funny thing is, over the years I've done jobs for Aetna, Cigna, The Hartford, Lincoln Financial, Mass Mutual, and Phoenix Mutual and none of them has ever required it. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
