What's the consensus on audition notices in which the client asks that more than a single script be read and submitted?

I just find it fascinating why someone wouldn't be able to determine with one complete spot whether a given talent fits their requirements... especially when there is no direction, apart from requesting a 30-40 year-old male.

I'm sure I would know.

"In your demo, you want to put your best stuff first. If producers don't hear what they're after in the first 10 seconds, they move on to the next demo."

Is this an audition from a P2P site?

I think the request is made when there are no creative molecules in the head of the requester.

The agent is just passing along instructions from the client. What surprises me is I guess I always assumed that clients who look for talent through agents are able to make the leap. I mean they're in the biz for the most part, right?

One recent one from an agent came with a request to read two scripts, followed by a later update substituting a different second script. That "new" script had already been the subject of a casting by the same client (via the same agent) two weeks earlier. But, as the man said, "Do you want the job?"

What bugs me a lot more than multiple scripts in the same audition is when a job poster (generally on the P2Ps) makes a change in the copy -- not a change in the style or approach, just some different wording -- and re-posts the entire job rather than just casting someone from the original audition and sending him or her the revised script.

It sometimes astounds me that people in an ostensibly creative profession can be so devoid of vision or imagination. Or maybe they're just looking to steal a VO. Sarcastic

Shouldn't really have to do it but if the job paid well and the client was only going to audition a few people I'd do it.

Fee?

Free scratch tracks?

I agree with Lee about the substitution of a word or two, followed by a re-audition request. Why would this be needed? See first sentence, above.

Fee?

Philip raised a good point (duh, when does he not?). This particular agent who sent this audition notice never includes a fee, but usually does indicate intended usage. I would indeed do more than one script if the rate was right and there were to be only several others submitting.

On many occasions I've wanted to ask what the fee is, but have not. I would think that knowing the fee would allow talent to decide whether they wanted to audition, thereby potentially reducing the number of submissions to listen to. What might be a reason for the fee to be withheld?

Lee's mention of a client requesting another submission due to a few changed words... I have to admit, that makes me suspicious.

The fee may be the deal breaker. A couple of months ago I did a 2 and a half hour session for someone due to the nature of the production and the reputation of the studio involved I waited until the self billing details arrived. Big mistake ...HUGE! No blame here but it did cost me dear in terms of time, I also kept other better paying clients waiting.

When I discovered the rate, about half what I would've expected with no use, I called the account exec and explained that had I known I would've declined the job. I added that I did not expect them to go to the client and ask for more as that would be unfair but they should please keep it in mind for the future ...it appears they have ..No calls from them since.
