The job I referenced paid multiple thousands so it was well worth reading two scripts.

And... slightly off-topic... I'm now waiting 75 days (which will, undoubtedly, go to 90 or more) for payment for a job in which the rate was stated up-front: $150.

I may decline future dealings with this company for fear of taking their last dime. Maybe I should have offered to pay them.

To my shame I've done that. My response to fee of $125 was.

"I think I can manage that, should I paypal you or would you prefer cash?"

Gotta tell ya, it's pretty common. Always done with short tags. But my agent more often than not asks for 2-3 different takes on the copy. And even if they don't, I often do at least 2. When I read a piece of copy, if my personal choices differ from that of the specs/producer, I give em 2 takes. The first one is exactly what they are asking for. The second one is what I think will sell me better. And I always slate accordingly: "Bob Bergen, 2 takes." This way they know to be expecting more than one take. Usually when I get the gig they want it read with the writer's intent. But it's my different take on the script that gets me in the door. Ya gotta take risks.

Good advice Bob. In context, each job for which Bob auditions will be for at least Union Scale so that helps in the decision making process.

A few days ago an agent asked me to audition for a job which will be a pretty big deal. The audition resulted from the ad agency hearing my demo and the detected something in me I had never heard ..... Morgan Freeman.
Could I do a read in the style of (sounding like) Morgan Freeman. As it turned out the answer appeared to be .....Mmmmm sort of but I needed to drop the British precision. We'll see if it flies. If not, I really enjoyed trying.

I think this is both a reasonable request and par for the course. However, I believe the original question wasn't so much about multiple takes of a single script, but rather about multiple pieces of copy in a single audition. That may also be a reasonable request but it does sometimes get you wondering about the ability of a producer to engage in creative thinking.

'Zactamundo, Lee. I'm happy to submit more than a single take. But, interestingly, this same agent limits submissions to only two takes, however each take must be in its own mp3. That's something else I don't understand.

I've gotta tell you Mike, something about this seems really odd to me. I've never read an entire piece of copy for an audition(unless it's a well-established client of mine), let alone two. I do however, give two different takes for most of my auditions, as Bob spoke about. I believe this practice opens up some new doors.

I just don't get two complete pieces, each on it's own separate file...

I think the point is that the producer/employer is seeking a brand voice.... Not just casting a single project, but seeking someone who can consistently represent them.... Therefore, more than one pitch.

When you are building a campaign, you want to be sure you are sold by the right personality, not just a lucky read.

That's interesting, Don. That could very well be the case.

If it is, though, why wouldn't that be stated? I can't necessarily say that it would have any bearing on my reads, but at least I wouldn't be wondering why they needed two complete spots to make a determination.
