Warm birthday greetings to Oscar-winning voice-over legend Peter Thomas. He's 89 today, and still working (since the mid-1950s).
"Get me Peter Thomas" were the words from the lips of producers around the country that caused Peter to leave his post as local (NY) anchor of CBS News and take his voice-over career full-time.
More about Peter's life, here.
(I will happily concede that the late, great Don LaFontaine was the King of Trailer VO.) _________________ Mike

Thanks for bringing Peter to my attention, Mike. Even as a Brit, I've been aware of his voice for years, but never put a name to those glorious pipes before.
Couldn't download the Omaha Beach piece, but I enjoyed the Triumph of Man very much. For a piece done in 1964, it stands up very well. A lession in good diction from a master craftsman. Many thanks - and happy birthday Peter from your newest UK fan!
Cheers

I was on vacation last year and needed to record a callback for an audition, and had to try to find someone with a studio....(the one time I decided not take any road gear with me).... found a local VO guy who was very generous and helpful and let me use his Whisper Room.
He was Peter Thomas' son. |

The commanding, yet approachable voice of Peter Thomas, greatly inspired me as a youngster.
Happy Birthday, Peter! _________________ http://MichaelSchoen.com |

That is super, Mike. Thanks for the links and info. I can't imagine any American not knowing Peter Thomas' voice (even though I hadn't known the name that went with it till now).
I hope Peter had a happy birthday and has many more to come! _________________ jen@jengosnell.com

Well, there goes an hour of my time, happily, although the fawning, I-love-my-voice interviewer is a bit annoying.
Peter is one of the VO gods in my book.

I won't tell Don what you said about him. He's an old-school radio newscaster whom people of my generation may remember from NBC Radio news and their flagship program, "Monitor." _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Thanks, Bill, for posting that interview. I'd seen that a couple of years ago.

Maybe it's more prevalent in local radio, but there's a guy in my market who does have a decent voice, however, copy interpretation isn't in his toolkit. So it's close-mic schmoozing with either the wrong words receiving emphasis, or too much on the right ones.
It gets worse when he stretches for time; you'd rather he just hurry and finish. _________________ Mike

Too many years of coaching air talent have ruined radio for me.
I find myself wishing they'd just shut up.
Thank god for satellite radio. _________________ Don Brookshire

I actually wish the 'Beautiful Music' format (I guess most would call it elevator music) was still being done. It conjures an image of a Dad on a Sunday afternoon, either in a Naugahyde recliner in the living room or a chaise lounge on the backyard patio, while the musical stylings of the likes of Ray Conniff or Henry Mancini floated from the radio speakers, and we'd hear an announcer only a few times each hour, and only when they had something to say. _________________ Mike

I used to be one of those announcers. "On the Festival of Music on WPFM, you've been listening to Mantovani, the Ray Conniff Singers, Percy Faith and his Orchestra, and the Hollyridge Strings."
Bleeeeaaaah.
We still have a station in Hartford that plays that stuff. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
