Just got this message below from a friend of mine dabbling in voiceover....any ideas to help her?
I just set up a little recording closet and am having trouble with my mic...
I'm using my laptop (ACER) and a USB mic (Samson C01u), and when I record in my living room, the recording sounds clean (aside from the room noise), but when I step into my padded closet, there is a hiss (but no room noise due to the sound-proof padding) I'm lost...
any ideas that would help her out are much appreciated. |

If we could hear a recording of the "noise" that might help us in our effort to identify the noise. While there are some noises that "do not have a face"... there are some noises that many of us have run into in the past and we recognize them just like we would recognize someone after seeing their picture on the "Wanted" board at the Post Office.
Try turning the closet light off and on to see if the noise changes.
What's on the other side of each wall of the closet. If I were to go into the closet in my master bedroom and record, just through a sheet rock wall is the Uverse cable box and a TV... either one could be a nasty noise maker.
I don't think of thermostats as being generators of electrical "noise" but some of these new programmable units.... who knows.
Oh yes, If I were in MY closet, on the other side of another closet wall is our emergency Weather Radio. Real chance for noise.
And some times there is an Apple Nano charging up just outside my closet.
Have your friend become suspicious of every gadget that is near the closet. Plug and unplug them while the recording system is creating a recording.
But upload a sample of the noise somewhere and let us listen. |
