When I was 4 or five I used to run REALLY REALLY fast with my friends in my "Daps" (footwear). They cost my Mum less than a dollar and they lasted until they were surgically removed and replaced UNDER PROTEST with new pair.
A few weeks ago I went to OutRun in Fochabers. Scarlett measured my gait, footfall, both feet individually and discussed at length the type of running I did. After my "Fast Running" consultation she sold me a pair of cheap Chinese made "Daps" for $180 ...the left and right foot IDENTICAL sizes. Being 5 was better and my less than a dollar daps were better.
Now, work, VO work. Buy cheap Daps and see how fast you can run. It's great fun running with your friends. Do not discuss running with your friends, just run as fast as you can. Hear them cheer when you run faster than Paul for the first time. Watch as they stop, turn around and pick you up when you fall and graze your knee. Dave runs to your house to tell your Mum that you have been fatally wounded fast running from the Black Hand Gang the enemy of the good Pirates while you, the bravest fastest runner is carried home by a Guard of Honour.
I do not pretend to be an expert in any area of VO work I have just remained 5 years old, in cheap daps (no laces) and done fast running for over 20 years. Do it!
Should you fall and graze your knee I'll stop, turn around and come and pick you up. |

Aaarrgghh! Plimsolls with the elastic top! You're gonna kill me with these waves of nostalgia, Philip! Compulsory wear.. cheap and cheerful, but certainly did the job... except for running around on wet grass... absolutely no grip whatsoever... hence the ever-present grass-stained/scuffed knees and elbows!
The point is well made... we didn't over-think things. As an ebullient child we attacked life with a passion, and everything was meat for our imagination. We ignored those who would make us second-guess ourselves. They didn't share the adventure... what did they know!
I am enjoying my adventure... my natural cynicism blocks my ears to many of those "experts" who would want me to do it another way... not completely, but filters are engaged. As you say, the best help is from those who will turn around and pick you up (without a fee or monthly subscription). _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I'm sorry, you've lost me with the concept of "running". The last time I ran was for student body president.
But yes, I am still bowled over by the price of athletic shoes... well all shoes today. Apparently I'm getting a real steal on decent walking shoes at $125. And they're still making them with slave labor in Thailand or some such!
On this side of the pond the "daps" of our youth were often "Keds" brand.
Walk on.

Run down the sidewalk with my hobby-horse "Chopper".
It's the first thing I did when I was 9 and the furniture arrived in Hawaii.
I wish I had pictures. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Monk --- keep it up. I loved/hated it every step but when I finally did 20 full minutes I knew I could do anything. And I've since done a lot of anything...
Was just asked to narrate a documentary about where my first sneakers came from - Nikes, right next door where many of my adult family members worked in the 70s & 80s...my uncle got them for us for, as far as I knew, free. Imagine Nike made in the USA right downtown. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

Anyone got a piece of plaster for my knees? I saw that they were banged up when I got back to the U.S. |

One of my favorite pictures of me was one my dad must have taken when I was about 3 or 4...I had just woken up and had come outside onto the porch of our no-running-water-or-indoor plumbing cabin (not far from where I am now), smiling, in my sweater, jeans (even back then I wasn't much for dresses!) and my little blue Keds.
I still have them...I found them when I moved my parents out of our apartment in NYC.
I can't help but smile when I see that picture.
I should find it again & keep it close.
I have been helped by so many from this little corner of the 'Net: for that I thank you. If there is anything I can do to help you, just let me know. _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!
