I haven't posted in months and now two posts in one day. (My other was email problems in the vein of Philip)
In a discussion about SoundStreak on this forum, Don Brookshire mentioned that there was an EWABS episode featuring Beau Weaver speaking on the topic. So I went to the EWABS website, and the first video that pops up is Dave Courvoisier, and 9 seconds in, Dave leaves, then I hear ME say 'They're here', which intros Dan Lenard and George Whittam, Dan pops up for a second and then back to Dave. All in a very poorly edited promo with Dave way over modulating at the beginning, at least on my system. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ewabs
So what do you do when you're watching something and you hear you and you didn't authorize yourself to be there. 'They're here...' is not that big a deal, and the way it's been edited, which is very poorly, it might have just been a mistake. It just surprised the heck out of me and I thought I should have been asked.
BTW, when 'They're here' popped up, it was with the VO Peeps logo. I tried to go to the VO Peeps website and my antivirus, BitDefender, won't let me go there. Says it's dangerous!!!
Not sure what's going on there and wondered if someone knew. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

Agreed.
The editing was a total mess.
I'm not sure if it was done by the guys at EWABS or VOPEEPS.COM.
I went to the vopeeps website (I use avast antivirus suite - which is usually pretty good about keeping me way from "bad" web site) and it was no problem.
I don't know Dan and George personally, but I've spent a lot of "virtual" time with them watching their weekly show. They seem like agreeable fellows.
I'd drop either of them a quick email with the heading...... "WTF?". |

No argument.
I simply didn't want to embarrass them with too vivid a description of how wonderful they are...
Where I come from...Men don't talk that way.
"Yep...he's a pretty good 'ol boy." (the supreme compliment)
Those two are...pretty good 'ol boys. |

Actually due to the sloppiness of that whole first bit I'm thinking it was an erroneous bunch of garble that slipped through.
Yes they're nice guys, and yes there's a "fair use" rule out there somewhere, where for informational purposes you can use brief clips of other material. Plus, since these guys aren't using your voice for money making purposes (I think), instead just using a clip they thought was cool, you probably should feel honored instead of displeased.
Now if Dave C is using it to promote his money-making seminar business, that's another story and a friendly communication might be in order.

Bruce, I agree with your assessment. And the premise of my post that I was more taken aback than displeased. You're listening along and all of a sudden you're surprised by what you think is your own voice. I had to listen several times to make sure it wasn't someone who sounded like me. Then when I figured out that it was, I was curious as to WHAT it was. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

That happened to me tonight -- sort of. I'm watching the episode of Wheeler Dealers - Trading Up that I TiVo'd and was fast-forwarding through the commercials but before I could hit the button I heard a familiar voice. No, it wasn't mine, it was Rick Riley's own voice in a Mothers Polish commercial. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

You know when you fast forward through the commercials, it's the same as stealing. Please go back, watch and listen to them very carefully. ALL of them. Thank you. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

George is a pro. The odds are good he was not involved in this unauthorized usage. It's not a grey area It's a promotional video made to sell seminars and they liffted Rick's voice without permission. It's not fair usage...it's disdainful, especially in our own small industry. Also, selling voiceover education this way is very tacky. Yuck. |

I continue to be amazed at how many people seem to be making more money teaching "other people" how to do voice overs....then...doing voice overs |

Which episode are you referring to, Rick? I'd like to rectify this. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
