Hey guys, having some audio issues at the moment, but I can't figure it out. Ive narrowed the offenders down to two devices, my Rode NT1A and my Mackie Blackjack. The XLR cable is brand new. I switched out the USB cable. Everything else in the chain has been pulled and I even changed my recording computer and environment so I'm pretty certain those aren't the issues.
I took both items to Guitar Center just for kicks, and they were checked separately- don't ask! I wasn't there when the mic was checked, but I'm told it works fine. I was there with the Mackie and it did seem to work. We couldn't try both items together at Guitar Center so I wasn't able to replicate the problem, but together, at home, these two items suddenly aren't playing well.
Here's a soundcloud clip. Just for a bit of background: The first, seriously static-y section is with the cable plugged into line 1. The part where it flatlines completely is when plugged into line 2.
Any thoughts?

Sounds to me like the cable is the common element.
Just because it's new, don’t assume it's OK.

Just a guess, but maybe a driver issue with the interface?

When you were recording on input one, were you seeing a decent level for the voice? What I hear sound like virtually none of the signal is making to the computer. That could be a bad cable or a wrong setting somewhere
Was the Signal/OL LED green indicating a -20 dBu or more signal present?
Were you hearing a strong signal in the headphones? |

| Hey guys! Thanks for the suggestions, but mystery is solved. Remember how I said GC took the mic back to test it and said it was working? Well, I don't know how they were testing it, but it was definitely the mic. I took it to a friend's studio and had the same problem with the mic hooked up to his mixer and cables. Reading up, the weird "wind noise" is a bit of an issue with NT1A's. So next step is to call Rode and see if I can get this fixed. Oh and get a backup mic! Thanks again guys!! |

They probably plugged it into an amp, blew into it, said "Check 1 - 2," and heard something in the speaker and said, "Yep, it's working."

1 vote for cable or connector...
My troubleshoot would be to just have the Blackjack connected to your daw by itself, work all the knobs and buttons and thrash it (gently) around a bit and while checking for noise. Next do the same with only the cable attached. Old and new. To both inputs! Next with the mic, wiggle the connectors etc...
Should tell you whats up pretty quick.
