I have a client in Hawaii and was trying to locate affordable treatment materials for her 4x7' closet. I stumbled on this stuff:
http://www.homedepot.com/p/UltraTouch-48-in-x-24-ft-Radiant-Barrier-30000-11424/100661257?MERCH=REC-_-product-1-_-100656747-_-100661257-_-N#.Uh0gR2Rgbzo

Knowing how well Ultratouch works for acoustic baffles, this looks like a killer deal, but trying to figure out how thick it is, and therefor, "how low it'll go".
She'll need to have her parents ship it to her since Home Depot won't ship it to HI.

Anyone try this product?

According to the specs, it's 3/8".

I purchased ROXUL from Lowe's. They don't stock it. You place the order and they will ship to your home or to your local store. About 3 inches thick, sheets just a little bit smaller (the width of a 2x4) that 2 feet by 4 feet. Eight pieces in a bundle. Mine ran about $50. Don't know if shipping to Hawaii would be any higher or not.

Just looking at the picture you posted, I have a hard time believing that stuff will do a really great job on acoustics.

Looks like it is the recycled denim with the foil backing for a heat barrier. I'd be willing to be the stuff without the backing is cheaper. I got a bundle for $50 at Menard's when I was on vacation and needed a quick booth. At 3/8" it surely won't absorb the lows that the 3.5" stuff will.

I don't think Lowe's still carries, and Home Depot appears to only sell it by the case. You can, however, get a case of the 2" thickness that will cover 32 sqft. for $36 (a case of 6 16"x48" rolls of 2" insulation). Menard's carries it, but they don't have any stores in Hawaii.

I don't know if it's a factor but...

This stuff "reflects up to 97% of radiant heat."

You know those shiny Emergency Survival Solar Blankets developed for astronauts? They retain only 90% of your body heat by comparison.

Hawaii you say?

It could end up being a very WARM closet.

Just a thought.

Yikes, at 3/8" you'd need many layers of this stuff to equate a 2" layer of Roxul, taking the cost effectiveness way down... Looks like Lowes stocks that Roxul product in Hawaii, so that would be the best deal by far.

How did you use the Roxul? Did you cover it? Leave it exposed? Put it inside some walls? I'd love to hear how effective you feel the stuff is and how you used it.

The most common approach is to build a simple frame, fill with Roxul, wrap with acoustically transparent fabric, and hang. Repeat until desired results are achieved.

That's pretty much exactly what I had in mind.

But I wasn't sure what is the best "stuff" to put in the frames. Years ago I found it necessary to build my own not-so-portable but removable booth and I built it with pink fiberglass in the walls and then covered the inside walls totally with Auralex. In fact, the auralex outlived the booth as I've since donated it some guy in a pickup truck who probably is using it as his cabin's "outhouse" these days.

But the surviving foam is not enough to cover the room I'm in now....and besides the idea of going back into a sweat box that made my ears pop every time I closed the door...is not as appealing as it used to be...when I was younger.

And this is why some of us prefer to treat a room instead of a box. Wink

I really tried to get some new-fangled denim to do my new area, but neither Lowe's or Home Dopey even wanted to ship-to-store (OK, HD would have if I wanted enough to do a whole house). I ended up getting Roxul Safe'n'Sound - which is supposedly made as a fire-retardant acoustic treatment. A couple of packs of 48x16x3 did the job nicely. It's installed with a 3" air-gap behind and covered in burlap.

BTW... it's not for a booth as such... my new room has a 4x4 walk-in which I'm going to use as an open-backed cubby... the rest of the room (13x9) will get all the super-chunks, panels and cloud from my existing room.

It is very weird that those places picked it up and then ditched it really quickly. I wonder if there was some issue with it. My Lowe's had it (lucky for me right when I wanted to buy it) and then dumped it. Maybe it just wasn't well received by builders or something.

My recording space is multipurpose so I couldn't have a fixed or even moveable rigid booth. There just is not enough space.

I purchased 2 bales of Ultratouch one in each thickness at Lowes. Bought some 8oz canvas tarps from Home Depot and made my own sound blankets. A couple of button tufts keep the batting in place. A few grommets, a tabling pocket (for pvc pipe or cord) across the top and some spring clamps allows hanging anywhere. Extra boom stands work great as movable panels. A few strategically placed eye hooks throughout the room, some paracord and I am recording. With a cloud as well. When not in use they can double as a spare queen sized bed. lol

I specially made one that hangs from above the (very thin and hollow) door/frame and extends about a foot beyond the sides to the floor. Works great.

Total investment... maybe $150 including two cheap boom stands.

I have about 12 panels scattered about the room. At the far end of the room there are open-frame shelving units with wicker baskets full of genealogy, recipes, sewing patterns and books.

These items along with some bookshelves, a sofa, some wardrobe storage units create a maze of sound diffusers.

***** Pictures: Pictures of Panel construction *****

It does an excellent job of creating a good acoustical environment. This project DID NOT improve the isolation from external sound.
Getting the room noise down to an acceptable level is another story for later.

Interesting...

Much appreciated.

I noted that Bish also talked about spacing them from the wall. I had thought I could simply hang them like framed paintings...

How important is this extra empty space? What is it's acoustic function?
