I share this with you because I'm sure most of us have run into this before. 'Weird Script'. From my view, it was bulky copy and a 'how the heck am I going to give them a read that will accomplish what they're looking for' mentality. Basically, 'I didn't get it'. The only redeeming quality from my standpoint was that it was short, I seemed to have the type of voice they were looking for and the budget, for what it was, was decent. From Voices.com. it was $250 to $500. So I bid five hundred and gave it a shot.
The direction:
We're looking for a talented voice-over professional to help provide a segment of the entrance video for the NC State Football team. The video will be played on the display board at Carter-Finley stadium for an audience of 60,000 fans immediately prior to the Wolfpack football team taking the field for each home game this fall.
We're looking for something that can immediately hook them in -- a solemn, deep and powerful voice, but not a distraction from the video itself. This portion will be a bit slower in contrast to latter half of the video, which will pick up and build rapidly to music as the highlights play.
The copy:
“When nothing seems to help, I look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock; perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.”
With all that being said, and as weird as I thought the read sounded as a dry VO, here's how it turned out. I thought they did a good job and I was surprised, so I thought I'd share.

So many times when auditioning I think "if I only knew the setup of visuals and context I could probably give what they want."
Too many casting calls give you nothing to go on. This is where your own script interpretation skills kick in. With nothing other than your own instinct it's amazing how things work. |

Surprising. Just reading the copy alone doesn't show the overall vision.
But when all the parts are assembled...
Thanks for sharing. Impressive. _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

After decades of watching This Old House and other home improvement shows, and seeing segments featuring landscapers and stone masons shaping slabs of granite into walkways and stairs, I am more than familiar with the process being described, so that copy made perfect sense to me (and I think it's pretty well written). And Rick read it just right! _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

The copy is a quote by a journalist, Jacob Riis, in the late 1800's I believe, so yes, it is well written. My (personal) problem was, putting a straightforward quote into a read that was going to build excitement. IMO, the quote wasn't written to build excitement, it was written to describe perseverance. So mixing the two, to me, was awkward... and after I did it, it sounded awkward. But as many have noted here, supplemented with the right elements, it all came together. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics
