Right now we are experiencing some rather crazy thunder, lightning, and rain. Several of you are going through the same thing, I know. I went to unplug my laptop then remembered the most beautiful thing: in our accidental renovation we had a whole house surge protector put in. $100 + the electrician (who was here anyway so it almost doesn't count). We also had one put in the barn where the real work is done. Not only is it protecting our computers but its protecting all of the electronics and appliances that continually draw electricity. Just thought I'd share!

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. " - Benjamin Franklin

Remember Ben? The kite? Lightning?

He knew what he was talking about.

During a heavy lighting storm, it would not be a bad idea to forgo some computer work. A surge protector of any kind, will not protect you in the event of a DIRECT lighting strike.

If you are using a laptop, the smartest thing is to pull it from the wall and use only it's battery, until the storm passes.

and it's not only storms. after we moved here 8 years ago - i blew 3 motherboards in 18 months ... it was starting to get expensive and irritating. it turns out that our power is NOT at all level. it jumps all over the place. i put in a heavy-duty triplite UPS and an equally beefy furman power conditioner and all has been well since.

not the whole house --- but it covers the important gear.

Those whole-house surge protectors look really cool. I wish I had one. But it's still a good idea to continue to use the same individual surge protectors you would have used before -- AND unplug critical stuff when a storm is on top of you. You know -- belt and suspenders -- and another belt. Smile

+1 on the Furman Power Conditioner. Essential if you care about your gear.
