Hi all!
So...I THOUGHT FIOS was available at Chez Liz Studio South....but apparently, it's NOT. Cry

I had Cable for years at my previous location, but never DSL.
DSL is available here via Verizon.
Is it worth it to go the DSL route, or stay with Cable?

My eyes glaze over with this stuff.

The fastest DSL available is:
7.1 to 15 Mbps Download
768 Kbps Upload

Seriously????? 768 Kbps??????
oy.

Cable:
up to 50 Mbps for downloads and up to 25 Mbps for uploads.

That's more like it.
Looks like I'm going back to Cable.

I'm currently camped out at my mother-in-law's, sowing strife, discord and all-around taskmastery over the poor Comcast soul who came out to "fix" the cable. I read the guy's boss the riot act on the phone after their "answer" was to run new lines throughout the house due to untraceable noise on the coax cables. The new lines would be at my in-laws' expense. Naturally.

Due to nonsense on their part earlier in the week, a Comcast tech put a filter on the connection to my in-laws' house because there was the aforementioned "noise" backflowing to other customers' systems. (Or so they say). What they DIDN'T do, however, was let my MIL know that they had done so, knocking out her internet and by consequence, her home phone which operates via VoIP thru Ooma. The TV signal was fine, but the internet konked out. What if there had been an emergency? It's awfully useful information to know that your home phone has been rendered useless.

After browbeating the supervisor, they agreed to run new lines to the downstairs television (restoring internet), as well as the master bedroom. They agreed to send another tech to run the new lines for free, which I'm going to let them do so, to alleviate the "noise" problem.

Then I'm switching them to U-verse. Fookers.

Cable all the way. DSL promised much but delivered little... and if you're a fair distance from the telco premises, it'll only be marginally better than dial-up!

Hey Liz,

Industry standard DSL or Cable is a 10-1 ratio download to upload. Why? We grab more data from the internet than we send. I have the fastest business class TWC provides @ 7 Mbps down and .7 Mbps (7 Kbps) up guaranteed. 7x7 they call it. It is plenty fast.

Don't let consumer cable fool you.... I have seen screaming speeds at 3am and then watch it crawl to a snails pace at 4pm when all the kids get home and when the parents get home from work. With consumer cable you are on a giant network with all your neighbors. The more users the slower it gets. DSL can be limited by the distance you are from the Central Office. Business class cable or DSL 7x7 has worked better for me. It is a guaranteed bandwidth.

I had BOTH ATT DSL and Cable for many years. (until recently) I needed the DSL because I had to have a static IP for a server application.

(but I was finally able to work around that)

My advice.

Stay away from DSL if at all possible. It's expensive and SLOW by cable standards.

I currently get 30meg down and 4 meg up. via Cable. DSL was 3 down and .5 up.

Also..someone mentioned about going with an optical connection. That's fine, but know that there is NO GOING BACK if it gets too expensive. When they put in optical they pull out all of your copper lines. So, after that, you options are limited. Just FYI>

Thanks guys!
I had Cable for 16+ years in the next town over so know about the slow down at certain times, but it was never enough to REALLY be an issue.

I was just shocked at what DSL was offering in terms of speeds since I assumed it was going to be faster. (you KNOW what happens when you assume Rolls Eyes

)

So I'll have the TV, Internet & Phone via cable installed on Monday....just in time for the new Fall shows...and, of course NJ DEVILS HOCKEY!!!! Wink

What's interesting is that the guy was surprised that I didn't want HBO or Showtime, but DID want the sports package. (Which I ONLY got because of Hockey!)

Oh...and Clutter Ash...they USUALLY pull all your copper lines when they install FIOS, BUT those of us with ISDN and who want to keep a landline have fought to have them leave those copper lines in place.

When they installed my FIOS I parked myself RIGHT THERE to make sure they didn't touch my copper. I not only have ISDN but I still have a copper landline

DSL is just outdated technology -- at one point, when many were using 56k modems, it seemed lightning fast -- but the way the internet has evolved it cannot keep up. Cable is great if there aren't tons of people in your sector using it.
But high speed fiber optic (FIOS) is superior if you can get it.

I wanted to dump Comcast a while back and got DSL installed.

I called the next day and cancelled it. It was absolutely terrible, slower than dirt and barely functional. A complete boondoggle.
