I guess I just melted into it. I didn't realize it was "real job" back when I was in college and working as a nanny and going into a studio one day a week to talk into a mic. It morphed when I realized, as an audio engineer with an audio engineer fiancee, we had all of the equipment to set up in our apartment and I stopped going to studios. Then we moved so I couldn't nanny for that family anymore and the gigs kept coming. One day I woke up and said, "Um, this is what I do. Ok, let's run with it and see what happens." I'm freaking grateful every dang day. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

Very kind of you to say, thank you Rick. The stroke was in 2004 and we're now working under the "new normal" as there's not much more recovery to be had. But we muddle through. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

BEST day EVAH!
I walked out with a smile on my face.
I called a contact that afternoon on the way home and they became my first client...and are still a client today.

I cringe whenever someone says to me, "I hear your voice all the time." Fortunately, that happens less and less these days as technology has enabled us to cast our nets farther and wider. There used to be a handful of us local voiceoverists who were the go-to guys and gals at the local recording studios. But they jumped at the opportunity to import out-of-market voices so that the same regulars would not be on all their spots.
At the studio where I did the most work, I had a nice run for several years as the voice of the Eastern States Exposition ("The Big E"), New England's version of a state fair. Eventually I lost that gig to a guy from out of town. He was pretty damn good so I called the studio to inquire if they still had the Big E business and, if so, who did the voice. They told me it was some guy named Bruce Miles. I said, "I'd like to meet that guy some day." Thanks to Faffcon (and by inference, the VO-B , I have, and will again next week. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Pushed, as was the entire company when we were all laid off. Still wish for the steady paycheck and benefits but do not miss the commute, politics and all those hours working on someone else's dreams. But I had almost resigned 4 weeks earlier so maybe it was a combo? _________________ Pam Tierney

I wanted for a long time to jump, but I couldn't afford to and I didn't want to give up a pretty nice severance by quitting (I was there for 13 years). The day they pushed me out was a happy, happy day (and yet, terrifying at the same time). My first year full-time is going better than I expected so far (funny what a little fire under your ass can do for you ) even though I haven't yet replaced my former income level. _________________ Back into the murky lurk from whence I came

I was doing some VO on the side when I got shoved out of my radio job in 2000. I remember the OH MY GOD I'VE LOST MY MOORINGS feeling! But I don't really recall what I did next except throw away a couple of hundred bucks at Voice 123 and get to work on my own doing god-know-what.
DeWitt was a hero in those days: he talked me out of looking for a "regular job". _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Pushed.
I was working at an SEO/website design company, and after my 2nd check bounced, (half the company had left already) I decided it was time. I was one of the last rats off the sinking ship.
Best, scariest decision ever.
And yes - Corey is the MAN. _________________ Adam

Neither.
I oozed into it. Story here (like most everyone else's):

I oozed, as well.
I started doing any and all acting-related activities after college, which included stage, on-camera and VO. While that was building, I did the requisite "day jobs," such as waiting tables, temping, and eventually I settled into my first "calling," which was tutoring kids with learning disabilities. I did that for about ten years, but with the economy woes of 2008, I took a hard look at where my income was coming from.
I was already doing 5-10 VO sessions a month in studio through my agent, so I figured with a little luck and determination, I could push that to full time, if I wanted. And I wanted. I built a home studio that year, started exploring online options and other agencies... and business has grown exponentially.
My ultimate goal is to surpass my husband's income, and let him retire early. If projections keep on track, I might be able to do that in a couple of years... _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

This made me smile because this is one of my goals as well . I want to make enough so he doesn't have to work if he doesn't want to (however, he is the type that will still find some work to do, even after he can retire ;- _________________ Back into the murky lurk from whence I came

HA! Mine, too. But I want him to be able to do what he WANTS to do, rather than what he HAS to do... _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.
