Although there were supersonic tears that day, I must confess this piece has been very good to me ever since...

Quote: | Ten years ago: Three Concordes swooped into London's Heathrow Airport, joining in a spectacular finale to the era of luxury supersonic jet travel. International donors pledged more than $33 billion for Iraq's reconstruction in the next four years -- nearly two-thirds of it from the United States. Tiger Woods matched the 55-year-old standard set by Byron Nelson by making the cut in his 113th consecutive PGA Tour event. Se Ri Pak became the first woman to make the two-round cut in a men's golf tournament since Babe Zaharias in 1945. |

So I'm betting it was the Tiger Woods' thing that got to Colin.
And... Rob? It was twenty years ago today he taught the band to play.

I grew up in the shadow of the Heathrow flight path and worked for many decades in the air transport industry. I remember at school watching out for the RAF sonic boom tests that were conducted to test the public's acceptance of the disturbance. Brian Trubshaw was a hero to kids everywhere. I watched the first Heathrow flight op. For me, Concorde evokes a visceral response. A thing of beauty that is now lost. Tears... yes. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Bish, I know what you mean. I watched a Concorde take off once and it was so beautiful I could hardly stand it. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

Quote: | On 10 April 2003, Air France and British Airways simultaneously announced that they would retire Concorde later that year. They cited low passenger numbers following the 25 July 2000 crash, the slump in air travel following 11 September 2001, and rising maintenance costs. |
Quote: | It has been suggested that Concorde was not withdrawn for the reasons usually given but that it became apparent during the grounding of Concorde that the airlines could make more profit carrying first class passengers subsonically. A lack of commitment to Concorde from Director of Engineering Alan MacDonald was cited as having undermined BA’s resolve to continue operating Concorde. |
