The stupid deal of the day is a great deal on a set of studio monitors. Street price $350 each, deal today, $300 for a pair. I've been needing new monitors, as my current KRK VXT4s have been having some random issues, and have started becoming fatiguing when I listen for a long time. They also have pretty poor bass response.

Either way, today, I could get a set of JBL LSR 2328P monitors for a good deal.

Any reason NOT to use 8" monitors for VO? I'm in an 8'x 8' treated room when I listen. I'd love your feedback before I pull the trigger.

THAT is a very tempting offer. IME, an 8x8 room properly treated for bass absorption and, using an 8" woofer, should work very well at letting you hear exactly what you've recorded. I cannot give you a single reason to not go for it.

I'm a big fan of JBL (been enjoying their 4410 monitors for 15+ years) and trying to find a reason NOT to hit my MF card on this one.

That was too good an offer. After my previous post I searched about online, read a number of reviews, saw how outstanding a deal of the day that is, couldn't find a reason to NOT do it and so pulled the trigger. They should be on my doorstep in 4-6 business days.

I did some looking, and have found the same thing. I pulled the trigger. They have already shipped. I plan on doing music as well as VO, so the bass response was a big thing for me. I know most people here use 5" monitors, but for the price I couldn't see passing it up. Even if they are terrible, they are selling on eBay for $200 a piece used, so I could make a little money on them if it comes to that.

I'll make sure to do a comparison of the VXT4s and the 2328Ps once I get them and have had some time behind them.

Ah well. Those monitors had a really funky resonance that only occurred with my voice (which is what I am listening to most of the time) at 280hz. I could hear a ringing coming from the monitors whenever my voice hit that frequency. Despite the stellar deal, they won't work with my voice, so there is no reason to keep them. Luckily MF extended free return shipping, so it was a fun test Smile

Just a thought, Jason... can you run a tone through them to see if it's perhaps the monitor and not your voice? If so, that would be cause for exchange. My pair arrived today... not as yet a chance to check 'em out.

It was definitely the monitor, but it only happened on my voice at certain times. I tested it on some other voices that I am editing, and it was only present with my voice. YMMV and it might have just been mine. I tried them in different locations in my room, and with various EQs and my voice just kept making them resonate.

Can't wait to hear what you think of those new monitors, Jason! I used to have the Mackie 824's which sounded like they had a built in subwoofer, incredible low end response. Now I have Bluesky Exo's, which I inherited from a client. They do the job for me, and since my room is very open with no door, the subwoofer fills it out nicely, and the satellites are small taking up minimal space on my crowded dual monitor desk.

The new 2328p JBLs I grabbed off the 'deal of the day' are taking a bit of getting used to. I understand Jason's thoughts completely. It's been positioning, repositioning and repeat; I believe these do have merit however, and I'll hold off final judgement. Monitors are like mics... "listen to them in your room" certainly applies here. At any rate, the DOTD price assures one of handily recouping the investment/cost.

After the same pair of midfield JBL (4410) for at least 15 yrs, this new 8" animal is certainly more chubby in the bottom than the 10" woofs I'd become accustomed to. New ones are a bit scooped in the mids as well, but to be expected compared to the nice 5" mid in the former.

With constant audio pumping through 'em to break 'em in, they're sounding better and I'm sure will improve more over time. As my room is just 9x11, they certainly have the ability to violate sensibilities filling a room with sound and accentuate the "boom" effect. My room has been generously treated with fiberglass treatment as well.

Respectfully,

Dave

While it's nice to have big, great sounding monitors, I mix for TV and Radio and smaller monitors work better for my world.

If my mixes sound great on small speakers, it sounds good on broadcast.
I have the benefit of hearing and seeing some of my work on local TV.

What sounds good on big monitors can sound puny on real world listening devices.

In the end, it's nice to have both. For a cheap set of small speakers, I can recommend the Alesis Elevate 3 monitors. Cheap but good thee inch speakers.

Yep. Couldn't agree more. I value greatly and continue to use the 'reality check' original Auratone cubes I purchased in about 1982. Still have smaller Alesis & Tannoy monitors too. Waaay too many speakers! I as well have benefited from decades of hearing my spots on local radio/tv/cable that I produced at home long before it was convenient/fashionable. It was quite simply easier to set up a mic/mixer/tape recorder at home rather than being pushed out of the production room. I digress and I tend to get boring when I digress.. Moving on! Wink
