|
|
I think I'm finally getting an Ipad (...welcome to the 21st century, Kristin...) -- but what storage capability do I need? 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB or 128 GB?
I want to use it as a travel rig, for reading scripts at home, and some internet use while I'm out. Oh, and I might read books on it.
Also, my notes from Faff5 tell me the Apogee mic is the perfect pairing with the Ipad for a small, sweet travel rig -- is this still the case a year later? _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

I've been using an ipad 2 with TwistedWave software and an Apogee MiC for over a year now. It works great, though it takes awhile to find the mic's sweet spot (especially for a male voice). I highly recommend purchasing a Mini Pop Filter made by Hook. PM me for their web address if you need it.

I personally was not super fond of the Apogee MiC, but is very usable for auditions. I even did an emergency job on it once. There are a few other iOS mic options to explexplore.
As for storage, 16 is sufficient if you arent going to store all your audio on the iPad. I have a 64 and never come close to filling it. My music is on my phone, I have a camera for good pictures, and my phone for quick pictures and videos, so that leaves the iPad for documents (which take up almost no space) and a s. When I got a new tablet, I just went with the 16. YMMV depending on if you put music on the iPad, or take pictures with it a lot. |

Personally, I've always felt that you can never be too rich, too good looking, or have too much digital storage space.
I'd say, get as much as you reasonably can afford.
That being said. At the lowest audio rate you would want to use (44.1/16bit/mono) it will take up 5.292 MB of digital space per minute...or 317.52 MB per hour. _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

I neglected to weigh in on the storage subject. One of the reasons to use TwistedWave as your audio editor on an iPad is the seamless connectivity to Dropbox. You can back up everything from the finished voiceover to the entire session if you wish (though I've never backed up anything more than the finished product). Personally I don't keep backups of sessions on my 16 gig iPad.

Ditto on the Apogee mic. An expensive audition mic. I did a gig on it but was holding my breath as I hit send
16gb on an iPad 3, and I've got about 1/2 available left after two years. You really can't store anything on an iPad anyway, except photos/videos, iTunes purchased music library, scripts in Goodreader/Pages. You can store projects in TW but those usually get dumped in Dropbox. _________________ Lee Kanne

Jason, Lee Kane:
Whenever the topic of the Apogee MiC comes up it always turns into a contest between Apogee and whatever the studio mic of the month happens to be. No one mentions that we're talking about a ROAD MIC. The whole point of going with an Apogee MiC and an iPad is to give relief to announcers weary of hauling around a backpack containing a laptop, ____ mic, preamp, and all the attendant cables, stands, and (God forbid) sound proofing required. I'm not suggesting the Apogee MiC can take the place of an expensive in-studio condenser. But it's served me well for over a year of professional use from out on the road. And not just auditions.
When I've returned to my office I've compared the Apogee audio to audio recorded here, and the quality is surprisingly good. Not the same, but very good. It just takes practice to find the sweet spot. Just like it does with the Senn 416.
And remember gentlemen, Kristin is a lady. She won't have to worry about low-end loss.

So..... as a tangent to this, since Kristen mentioned it for using it as a travel rig, I'm curious as to how many of you folks are auditioning or actually producing on the road that often anyway?
Back when I was traveling a lot teaching v/o classes (ugh), I tried doing some on-the-road auditions using my laptop, but the motel room acoustics were generally too sub-par. Nowdays I work at home 100% of the time, so I personally don't do remote auditions or production while traveling* but I AM curious how many folks do and how often. And why?
* And I have a personal rule to NEVER work while on vacation. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

With the right bed covers, pillows, curtains, etc, any hotel room can be soundproofed sufficiently. I spent the last 5 days visiting my Dad in Chicago and sent out finished TV News promo spots, a few commercials and an audition. These were time-sensitive spots, as all TV promos are. One narration was held off for today as the client didn't need it right away.
With a few exceptions I have a personal rule to always be available for work while on the road.

i have the google nexus 10 and 16gb has been plenty. i don't store audio on the tablet, though. i have recorded auditions and actual jobs with "USB Audio Recorder Pro" ($6.14) and/or Audio Evolution Mobile ($7.49) + M + my travel AT2020. i don't record on the road a lot - but it's handy to have a small kit when i DO travel.

That's debatable in some circles.
To address some points:
1) Yes, I want something specifically SMALL and PORTABLE so I don't have to lug an extra suitcase with me when I travel (...oh, and I don't want to take anything from my home studio with me, I want it all separate. I have enough techno-phobia, I don't need the added worry that I'll hook my mic up backwards when I get home...)
2) I don't travel a lot, and I try REALLY HARD not to work when I do... but in the last couple of years, I've come close to losing some jobs due to not being available, so I would like something for just such an emergency. If I never use it, yay me.
3) I also scribbled in my faffnotes that the apogee mic + Ipad were a nice combination for recording in the car. So no wrestling with pillow forts, just finding a quiet corner of the parking lot, yes?
4) And, no, I'm not looking to match my home set-up in quality. If a client wants me to record so badly they can't wait a week, then they can deal with my on-the-road rig issues. I would just like something better than speaking into a phone a ... Ok, a LOT better... _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

So, 16 seems to be the consensus -- is that still enough if I want to put some books on it?
I've never had a Kindle, and I still love turning pages... but not having to lug books on vacation would be an added plus of having an Ipad. _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

At first I thought you were asking about recording audio books! Yes, I have some 20 Kindle books on my 16 gig iPad.

16GB is PLENTY unless you are a geek or buy tons of iTunes stuff and want to carry it everywhere you go...
My new fave travel mic might be the AT875R, I have one and have been very impressed with it so far. All the plusses of the 416 without the cost, and it sounds smoother than a 416 and less boomy. Plus it has a built in HPF so no handling noise, rumble or errant elephants speaking nearby being recorded you need to filter out later.
Plug that into the Apogee ONE for iPad and you have a killer road-rig. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
