I own a "plain vanilla" AT2020 and it has given me several years of great service. (As I upgraded my space as part of a move into VO, I think I got careless and let a little spray adhesive float around in the air while the mic was out in the open... something seemed to change for some reason!)
In addition to using it here at home as a voice mice, I have carried it around to various venues to do recordings of pipe organs, town hall meetings, and weddings. It got quite a work-out over 5 or 6 years.
My first reaction: "Oh no! Don't get the USB!" but with the little bit of info you provided, maybe it is a GREAT starting place. If the needs of the animation studio grow, they will not we walking away from a large investment. In fact, it can become a great stand-by piece of equipment, and still be useful for over-flow work volume. |

Animation is tough to record due to extreme swings in dynamics. A compressor before the A/D is VERY helpful, and it sounds like this needs to be as idiot-proof as possible. There's only two USB mics I know of that feature, Microphone X by Aphex, and the MXL Studio 24 USB.
I haven't used either so I can't vouch for them. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

This is a case where you would hope a local retailer had all three available and a facility where you could walk in and try them out.
The two you mentioned allow for 24 bit recording for the AT2020 is limited to 16 bit. The Aphex allows bit rate at 96 where the other two are limited to 48 khz. Conventional wisdom expressed by a lot of folks is that 24 bit exceeds our hearing ability, and your finished work is likely to be down-scaled to 44.1 so why worry about 96khz. But what you are saying is that people who are good at animation voices may have voices with extreme characteristics. That is a case where I would want to capture the very best, and then very carefully process back down to 44.1/16 in ways that would do the least damage or loss.
The MXL indicates that it comes with a rather sophisticated looking software but I'm guessing that some of that processes sound in the computer AFTER the A/D conversion. I guess if I had to make a quick decision, of the three I would favor the Aphex.... but I was wrong about something once before. |
