Hi all

One of my clients is looking for a male or female v/o with a Washington DC accent. I imagine it's for a web promo, but they haven't said. The jobs I do for them are usually less than five minutes of business to business narration/explanation.

Best to PM me I guess.

All the best

Colin

There's a DC accent? How does one sound like a lobbyist? Laugh

Seriously Colin, that's the first such request I have ever heard.
DC is a melting pot of people and I have never heard anyone say to anyone else "Yeah, you're from DC!"
New York, Chicago, Texas...yeah...but DC? Never.

True...never heard one. Probably if you give them something Richmond, Virginia-ish, that'll be close to what they're thinking. Or...not.

They may be thinking of some of our politicians, as in Senator Claghorn, the inspiration for Foghorn Leghorn:

On a VO note, I've played similar characters as politicians and lobbyists I'd say well over 20 times in my career... so far.

You make the sound of money. Shocked

Seriously, there is no accent most people would associate with Washington (DC) because such a large part of the population is not indigenous. And the ones who are, are not the ones we usually hear from.

I was born n' raised in Baltimore (Baldamore). I thought most of those people in DC spoke with the same Maryland (Murlyn) slang.

My guess would be similar to a Maryland accent, or like the characters in an early John Waters film like Female Trouble.

I was thinking about this request today and it struck me that DC, like quite a few major US cities, has a large African-American population. Even amongst that population the accent isn't homogenous (this is true of African-American accents in Atlanta as well). Checking the stats, and indeed DC was 50% African-American in 2012.

This can be played out to requests for 'New York' accents in voice over. We see these requests and perhaps think of wise guys with Italian or Irish infused accents. We don't think of Chinese Americans in Flushing or Latinos in the Bronx or African Americans near Flatbush, etc. Or, that now with hipster gentrification the Caucasian voices in NYC don't fit the international stereotype of NYC accents at all.

There are still agreed upon regional and parochial accents in the US, but when it comes to top-ten metro areas, it's much harder to pin it down.

I know of one girl from DC, and she sounds like a true east coast latina.
