Ok, here's an idea. After doing my umpteenth VO for some awards event in some exotic place, it occurred to me that we have nothing of that nature in VO. A friend of mine sells the Medifast diet. He's always going to Maui, Cabo San Lucas, or somewhere cool as some incentive trip. Where do I go? Into my recording booth where I talk to people in New York, LA, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, who have BEEN to, or are GOING to, Hawaii, Jamaica, yada, yada and yada.
So how about if we start a pyramid scheme, like Amway. I could be the President and someone here could sign up under me and someone under them and so on. Then we branch out. To everyone who has said, 'I've been told I have a good voice, I'd like to get into voiceover', you give them something like a pin or a button with big lips on it. Now they're in. Then we start selling them products. Like the Voiceover for Dummies books, only we just change it a little and call it 'Morons With Good Voices'. Then there's throat spray, corks for enunciation, scripts with words like McDonalds and Lexus. See where I'm going with this? Then we all meet in Fiji or New Zealand or Switzerland or somewhere for a big 'Incentive Awards Extravaganza' and come up with new ways to bilk VO newbies.
It's just the germ of an idea, but an agent this morning in negotiating a fee for me, said, "Just playing one time at a conference in Hawaii. I asked if they'd throw in a round trip ticket to Hawaii...just for funsies. Haven't heard back " I even offered to do it live, and you know, honestly, I don't think it will happen. So I'm taking the ball and running with it. Anyone with me on this?
Your ideas on how to get this rolling, products, incentive / award meeting places, etc., all welcome!
Thanks!

Now you're thinking, Rick! I believe there are a few companies who beat us to the punch and we all know who they are...but I can't say 'em here. |

Gee, this selling lots of VO training and products idea sounds awfully familiar... like some web seminar event that's been going on for the past month or so? I don't know much more about it because I keep chucking their almost daily emails.
I'm afraid the only way to really make the moolah is to go out and earn it, ala this Smith Barney commercial featuring John Houseman... what a classic pitch:

Keep in mind Bruce, they did have a little help via a kickback scheme with Citigroup, which netted over a $100,000,000. They lost the lawsuit which paid out $4.95 mil. I'm assuming the lawyers got a huge chunk on both sides, leaving the clients out in the cold and everyone else still fat with cash. Which is pretty much what I outlined in my original post!
(PS... That lawsuit may be one of the many reasons you don't see those Smith Barney spots on TV anymore) _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

Yeah, I didn't imply they actually earned it. Hey, you can say anything you want in an ad until they prove you wrong.

LOVE it, Rick! But who're we gonna get to announce the awards at this event? (Or do we hold a contest and charge the winner for the privilege?)
<threadjack>
Rick, any chance the "paramedic" line in your auto-sig was inspired by one Ms. S. Fitz?

Love your line of thinking re charging others to do work for us, but the threadjack was whiplash back into a reality that almost took therapy to forget.
I'd like to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, but since mine may be ruined now with flashbacks while stuffing the bird, I really don't see how that can happen. Thanks dude... _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics
