My mic pre died this week and I'm in the market. I'm using an Aphex Master Voice as a back up and it's a tad boomy for my liking.

I have a Neumann TLM 103 and I'm very happy, but I would love to hear from you guys and see what you're using.

Also, maybe let me know what you think the units to avoid are.

Thanks Smile

I used the TLM-103 while I was still doing radio in Boston. It was paired with a Summit MPC100 tube pre. The tubes warmed the mic's sound nicely.

Personally, I'm a big believer in Avalon's M-5. Sounds stellar with a Sennheiser shotgun.

Not to start an argument, but I've never heard a mic preamp described as "boomy" before. What does that mean?

Does it have one of those "big bottom" type processors built in?

I like the TLM 103 with a tube pre like LA 610 or really any good colored pre like Great River, Avalon etc. I would avoid overly clean pres with the TLM 103.

Ha!

I guess you could say it creates a colored low end that just seems too hot. It does have the "Big Bottom" setting, but still sounds that way even without that setting engaged.

I'm looking for a smoother and more natural low end. The Avalon is probably the direction I'm leaning.

Thanks for the feedback you guys.

Hi Todd,
I'll throw another one in the mix...
John Hardy
IMO, a preamp with transformers will tame that mic's high end.
Good luck and Happy New Year!!

Never had one, but know some guys who have them and really like em. If I remember correctly one of those guys has the TLM 103 with Hardy combo. You do have to wait for yours to be built by John, unless you can find one used. I've only seen used ones on occasion.
Maybe someone who has one can chime in.

I have owned both the Hardy and the 103 but not at the same time.
IMO that pre would really bring out the best in that mic.

I've touted this since I bought it two years ago. If it went south or was lost by any other means, I'd get another. When a VO friend's Avalon 737 bit the dust, he wrote and asked me to 'sell him' on mine. I brought it over and let him use it. He ordered one the next day.

There's a lot of choices out there. I get constant props on my 'sound'. Even during an ISDN session the other day, the studio wanted to know what I was using. They loved the sound. If you're shopping, the Martech should not be overlooked.

Good luck!

Are you sure it isn't your room acoustics/mic proximity that's boomy?

I would highly recommend looking into the 500 series. The modules are often half the price of their 19" counterparts and we're now seeing a lot of amazing stuff thats 500 exclusive.

I have a A-Design P1 preamp (based on their Pacifica) and a Pete's Place BAC500 comp (based on UREI 1176) I might experiment on the mic, but this chain stays.
