Well, it's far from ideal, but Les McDonald's "porta-booth" works a lot better than the $23 he spent. If you're starting out on a very tight budget something like this could be your sound dampening answer:

I would have a problem reading copy with this setup, but it might work fine for others.

Hard surface box with thin foam - I'm pretty sure that this method will have a boxy resonance. Cutting large holes in the sides and buttom of the box and it should work - not as rugged and transportable though.

To my ears...and through my headphones...

His VO sounded remarkable like someone who was talking into a storage container. Laugh

Now whether that was an improvement over his using the Mic properly in his open space, I have no idea since during his introduction, we could clearly see the mic sitting in its new storage container home.

The one advantage I see in the portabooth or similiar self-made constructions made from those cloth-like expandable cubes is the material doesn't resonate. As any child who has had to make do with playing with whatever he can find will attest, talking into a large plastic box/storage container has that nice boomy "ringing" sound that we remember so well. So, although it might be said that this construction is "better than nothing" I still will take 4 couch cushions over it any day.

Just one opinion.

I made one too. I needed a solution to record auditions while I was at work before I was a full-time VO. Very boxy sounding. I only landed a single job because of an audition from that setup...not exaftly the best way to promote your capabilities. I don't think a producer cares if you recorded a quick demo away find your real studio...if the audio sounds bad, you sound bad.
