I'm a long-time fan of Robin Williams and I didn't care for his delivery on the new ad at all.
Besides the delivery, to me the audio sounded like it was recorded on a Blue Yeti inside a box. Just blecch audio.
Cranston did a great job. I love Clooney's delivery on the commercials he does. But Williams, although a talented actor, AND a good dramatic actor (I loved him in the Fisher King and 1-hour Photo), is, at heart, a comedian, and I personally felt that the deliveries of the more dramatic actors just carries better.
But hey, that's just me. After all, THEY'RE the ones getting hired to do the high-profile spots! _________________ Scott R. Pollak

The visuals in this piece are stunning. There's some beautiful scenery, much of which Robin Williams chews the daylights out of. I found the copy to be quite pretentious and Williams' dramatic expressiveness to be somewhat distracting, especially for anyone out there who's trying to guess whose voice it is. And can anybody explain to me how this copy in any way, shape, or form, says "buy an Apple iWhatever." _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Uh, guys, I think they lifted the audio from William's performance in the 1989 movie Dead Poets Society. I don't have a copy of it to double check, but it sure sounds familiar, and in the film he was a poetry professor often delivering advice through poetry to his young charges in a classroom, thus the sound quality.

That is exactly what they did. You've got a good memory!
The new ad:

Ever since they started putting together lush, gorgeous ads with irrelevant but oh-so-inspirational copy ages ago, ads have become less and less about a product, more and more about vague emotifyin'. At any rate, they used it and they're apple, so sure as sunshine we are going to start seeing this creeping in as a direction reference soon enough. (could you read "Bob's payday loans" like that Robin Willaims apple ad? thanks.)
cheers,
Andrew Fogarasi

Bruce, you've got a great ear. You ought to get into something that involves audio. Like maybe 'Voiceover'!

I knew it immediately when I heard it -- it's one of my favorite movies... _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.
