Forgot to mention that my 50 minute transatlantic session was done with my computer on WiFi.

I was working for a production company this morning and I mentioned it to them because they said their firewall blocks Skype. They asked me to forward the in:quality media details and were very enthusiastic about it.

add me to the YAY column. I'm breaking up with my AT&T boyfriend who cheats on me, talks bad to me, uses my car and doesn't fill up the gas but who I kept around because he looked good in a suit. I've been contacting local production companies (who'm I wouldn't be patching with as I'd be going in there) to see what they were using for long distance talent and if they'd heard about ipDTL. Several had and were either testing it or had been asked very recently about it. Also contacted the very few peeps I do ISDN business with and ipDTL was on a few radars. I will say that ISDN is still for the most part their go-to but the door was opening a crack at this point. With my rates jumping from $290 to $396, it's time to kick this bad boy to the curb and either try to unload my very expensive box or start needlepointing a cover for it so it can become a doorstop.

I too have contacted several of my ISDN producers, touting IPDTL. Most had heard little or nothing about it, but all promised to look into it.... especially after I mentioned the long distance "charges" were FREE, and the annual fee is less than most people's monthly line fee.

This is how we effect change folks. If enough of us contact all of the people we do ISDN with and mention this wonderful new thing that saves us all a lot of money... we might just see a revolution.

Now, what to do with my $3,600 Prima LT. Hmm. Too big for a door stop.

Agreed, Bruce! That production house in Boston I mentioned bought ipDTL this morning and called me to arrange to do a test later today!

Be the change you want to see in the world! Smile

Depending on what Dave Immer finds, I may be in the same boat - AT&T went from 247 to 307 this past month, the house purchase in Texas is in progress, not sure if I can even get ISDN and if so, what's it gonna cost - think I did maybe 3 ISDN sessions all of this past year. I just hate to jeopardize those relationships I have that are predicated on having it "just in case"...but if'n I can't get it I can't get it. And if it's gonna be 600 bucks to set it up & 400 bucks a month to have it, I'm like Forget it. Big changes ahead and this may well be one of em.

Here in Vegas last night and out to dinner with Courvo, Dustin, Joe Cip and a bunch of others, the subject came up.

AJ McKay was saying that he just dropped his service in Louisville when the monthly hit $400.

Everyone's checking out the ipDTL thing, it seems. Joe was saying that he's talked to a lot of the major studios in LA about ISDN alternatives. Most are amazed at the quality vs. price aspect but……nobody wants to change.

I did hear a few instances where the client was way more interested in talent than connectivity. So, we've got that one going for us right?

The tipping point's gotta come sometime.

Just a thought regarding you talk where you are and they record where they are connectivity.

My first VO session last week took place on Monday morning, it was a TV promo session and it was ISDN. My first session next week is Monday morning, VO for animation project and it will be ISDN. Since the introduction of ipDTL no company with a paying gig has mentioned the new technology to me. Since Source Connect has been around it has been mentioned to me twice, possibly three times but it went no further than a mention. My best paid recent ISDN VO session was around $10,500. My experience is unique to me, I fully accept that.

Regardless what we decide my guess is that the buyer will ultimately decide not the seller and we'll simply have to fall into line.

I'm one of the lucky ones. I have my ISDN which gets used roughly once a week and has become a part of my VO "armoury"... and a significant contributor to my revenue stream. It costs me around $60 per month.

The issues are simply that (in the US) some people can no longer get it, and some people are having to pay up to $400 per month. All this is fairly insignificant compared to the latest news... someone with an existing ISDN service has now had the service withdrawn because the telco no longer wish to support it or have it in their product portfolio.

This is a major issue, and may become the big tipping point if the service is withdrawn from a number of studios or production houses. This will cause the anticipated flurry of activity that will cause the emergence of the successor.

Maybe the VOs can act as the pathfinders and beta testers so that when a studio has their ISDN yanked away, they at least have something like ipDTL in the back of their mind as an alternative.

The times they are a-changing... at least in the US. Removal of the service, if done on any large scale (especially with the studios), will force the issue... and forcing it is the only way it will change.

... and I have tested ipDTL and found it to be pretty good.

I've not tested it and am certainly not expressing any opinion either way regarding what's next with exception of cautioning against spending too much time and money trying to get the tail to wag the dog. I'd be interested in giving it a try for the sake of £100 or so and not too much faffing about as it's like me buying a fire extinguisher, no immediate plans to use it in anger but you never know when it may come in handy.

To be exact it's £103 or $169 and change for a year's worth of service.

Versus the $1,000 a year that some like me spend on ISDN lines and the $4,000+ AT&T customers are spending? Plus studios pay those long distance fees which can add up too. Plus you can set it up anywhere there's high speed Internet...the heck with ISDN lines. Those are the leverage items that will send people over.

The big hangups are:

Ignorance. The mindset that "I've never heard of such a thing so it can't really exist yet".

It's new. But is it really? We've know this was going to be reality for the past several years thanks to FF and others. Now it's here.

Because IPDTL is new, they don't have a track record, so will they crap out at some point and then what do we do? We can't just jump back to ISDN, especially if the Telcos will shut it down once we've left.

On the positive side, IPDTL doesn't have an exclusive on the concept so they will soon have quality competition, so Telcos won't matter, yes?

The IPDTL business model can't possibly provide for the kind of support isdn and Source Connect users have come to expect. That's what separates a pro tool from a hobby tool, IMHO. Source Elements gets a bad wrap for charging for upgrades and support, but they don't require a subscription to use the software and must maintain the servers and debug driver issues which are out of their control. It's still a very small company serving a niche audience. It's only a matter of time before they'll adopt features that perform the way IPDTL does. That said, competition is always a good thing for the consumer, so I look forward to seeing what comes this year. I expect to discover a new comer or two at NAMM next week.

Very curious who lost their existing isdn service, Bish. PM me if you feel like it.

I just did a test session with MIKU in Tokyo!!!!!
Me - in the mountains of upstate NY
Miku - in Tokyo
He emailed me after coming here & seeing our thread on ipDTL and wanted to test it.

Totally clean and perfect sounding session that went on for about 20 minutes with not one dropout.

It was so wonderful to speak to him (He has 3 kids now! 2 girls & a boy)
For the newbies here, Miku is Michael Rhys who is a Brit living with his family in Tokyo. Several of us met him at VOICE 2007.
(He has one of the coolest website graphics EVAH! http://www.michaelrhys.com/)

Anyway...just another successful test!
& got to speak with a friend: BONUS!!!!
