I have about 8 audiobooks on my external hard drive that is taking up a ton of space (especially since one book is just under 40 hours!). My HD is running super slow and I've deleted everything I can. I'm looking to get another HD if I have to but in the meantime, can I and should I just chuck these books? _________________ Pam Tierney

DVD's are your friend. I have a copy of most everything I have created over the past ten years or so. Once completed and approved I burn them to DVD's and archive. This allows me to free up space on the HD and still have a perfect copy.
Just a thought Pam.

I have a collection of the tiny USB powered hard drives.
External USB hard drives are cheap and easy to deal with...so long as you don't drop them out of a 3 story building. And....they take up very little room.
1 TB HD = approx 217 DVDs.
Some might make the argument that DVDs are more reliable than a HD. I'm not sure I agree. Many of them use an organic based dye process and I have had the occasional DVD crap out after a few years in storage. _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

Get yourself a cheap 2-3 terabyte hdd from costco. Convert your old books to a high bitrate mp3 and archive them on the drive. Then back that drive up to a cloud service.
Do you NEED to keep them once they're published? Probably not. But I've kept all 150 of mine and they barely made a dent in the external HDD. _________________ Jeff

i agree with jeff & newegg has a great deal right now. 4tb for only $150 - deal ends today. i have 5 of these in 3tb and have had no problem with them. when they are full, i unplug them & put them in the safe. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

That is a great deal Todd. I'm looking at it seriously. In the meantime, I do have a boatload of CD-R's and DVD-R's I can use to alleviate the log jam. When I move the file to the burn disk thingy on the Mac finder window, I get an alias, not the file. Is that ok that the original file isn't going to be burned completely, just the alias? Will it be able to be restored completely when and if I need to call it back to life? In over my head on this one. Thanks! _________________ Pam Tierney

In theory you'll never need your original audiobook recording files again.
HOWEVER, several months after I had a book done and accepted, Audible came back and said I had left off the beginnings of several words. Turns out the production company that had hired me had mastered them with harsh gating which was cutting off the beginnings of many words. They couldn't find the original files I had sent them and I was able to save the day with my handy saved files.
Hard drives are dramatically cheaper and easier to use than DVD's these days. I have several blank DVDs and 70 or so blank CDs that haven't been touched in many years.

There's no rule that says you can't burn stuff onto DVDs and copy them onto a backup hard drive.

Speaking as someone who once lost 6 months worth of work...REDUNDANCY is your friend. Computers and digital technology are incredibly powerful, and at the same time....remarkably fragile. The only thing better than having a backup...is having TWO backups. (Ideally not at the same physical location) _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

assuming you are doing this through finder - when you drag the file to the dvd it will appear as an alias so as to not duplicate GBs worth of data. when you burn the disc, all of the information will be there. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Say I'm old fashion but I don't want my data on "the cloud" nor live my life on social media. As you were. Carry on.
P.S. Got a 3 TB Western Digital External HD after the holidays at Walmart for $89. _________________ Gregory Best

Pam, everyone - including me has danced around the issue of "Is there any reason I should keep my old audiobook files"?
The answer is: wait for it.... wait some more.... Yes.
I can think of a few reasons why I would keep the files. One, vanity. Two, safekeeping. Three, nostalgia. Four, .... Well I am still thinking.
The real answer is: It is your choice. I keep my old files to review after a long period and see how I have improved or not. But then again, I also record others to see how they have improved - or not (all friends whom I have their permission to record and archive the files).
How you keep your old files and why is up to you. Do what your heart desires.
