I've never really dipped my toes in the telephony waters, but recently a new client has been giving me lots of great consistent telephony work, so I thought it was time to put together a demo:

Thoughts:
- is it too commercial sounding? Not enough standard "press 3 for..." stuff?
- 1:00 length okay for this niche?
- I kinda mixed in telephony, IVR, and message-on-hold...is that normal?
(Note: that female voice you hear is the Pond5 watermark. I downloaded samples to create the rough cut, then I'll purchase the tracks to finish the job)
Thanks! _________________ Adam

Hey Adam!
- is it too commercial sounding? Not enough standard "press 3 for..." stuff?
No it's fine in that regard..the only thing that was weird was at the end of the first segment and the snarky one towards the end,
there seemed to be a woman's voice saying....something?....under yours and it was pretty distracting.
...sounded almost like old-time cassette bleed through when you taped over another piece of music on a cassette tape.
If it wasn't intentional I'd take a look...if it was intentional...I'd remove it.
- 1:00 length okay for this niche?
Yep, that's standard
- I kinda mixed in telephony, IVR, and message-on-hold...is that normal?
That's fine. It was good that you did some with and some without music.
Generally IVR has NO music behind it on phone systems,
while MOH does usually have some light music in the background.
By the way in terms of terminology:
Telephony is the umbrella term for all voicover work for telephone systems
IVR is "Interactive Voice Response" which is the "press 1, press 2" stuff
MOH is "Message on Hold" which is the commercial/advertising you hear while you are on hold.
Hope this helps! _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!

Thank you Liz, that is SO helpful Exactly what I was looking for!
I should have mentioned in the first post - that female voice you heard is the Pond5 watermark. I downloaded samples to create the rough cut, then I'll purchase the tracks to finish the job

I did think it strange that the "audio watermark" was on all the music. But, now I understand that it is only temporary.
I thought the demo was killer. Plus your voice in right in the range that I've been noticing seems to be hot right now. Everything I hear on TV these days is a guy who sounds energetic and around 28 years old. (my interpretation). _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

Good stuff Adam! Totally in your sweet spot, and I thought the production was good. Great job!
My only comment would be that the second spot sounded a bit pushed. I think you could hit that one more naturally. It's a bit lower than your typical range (which is not bad to show range), so maybe doing that one first thing in the morning would give it a little more natural calm, authority and depth.
Stellar work my friend. You did a great job! |
