Wow.

I know this is probably old stuff, but you know I shouldn’t be amazed at people anymore. What with the pennies per play mentality of the online music biz and all… and how the media creator is getting destroyed by illegal downloads and these streaming services paying nothing to the artist that is getting them tons o’ cash from advertising revenue to be on their stations… I’ll stop… But. Why would you want to give away anything more if this is your deal is beyond me. I saw this today. Someone wants YOU to create a 60 minute relaxation CD for a whopping $250. Now… you need to be able to professionally produce the voice tracks WITH music and if you have royalty-free stuff available to use on this that would be fine. They want a “polished finished product that is ready for production.”

Ok. Really? Now if this was me, first of all there would be a fee for the voice. Standard rates. Next, if was a royalty-free track that I provide, you’re gonna pay for the license and usage per x amount of units sold. Then there are production rates, and more variables. Having made a completed product, the amount of time that goes into this, you might as well pay them to use you for that $250. And if I am thinking about this correctly, I am wondering if this is going to be used as a product in an online marketing website. If so, knowing these guys, they are getting hundreds of dollars for some of their products and services they are pushing. So let’s say that if this person is successful at what they do, and a lot of these guys are, and they sell these, and ongoing services and support, you will be majorly blankety-blanked while they sell you all day long for $100+ a pop or more all year long. Sadly, people have responded. Plus…. They want to know about discounts for multiple recordings. Discounts from $250???....You gotta be kidding. Good luck to whoever gets it.

This world is so backwards anymore.

Though in my more cynical moods, I am reminded of my wife's pessimistic rejoinder to that: "Yeah, but the scum also rises". So maybe the client will get a passable enough product to come out on top.

* 'tis a portmanteau of "schadenfreude" and "hope" : taking anticipatory pleasure in someone's possible future misfortune. If it ain't a word it should be!

My two cents:

First cent: "Schadenhoping" is a fine coinage.

Second cent: This job should cost $2,000 minimum.

Invoiced at your convenience.

Yes, I agree that it would be a minimum of $2,000.00.

We get calls from self-proclaimed "Hollywood producers" wanting us to do stuff on the cheap since it costs so much in Hollywood, can we cut'em a break, do 'em a solid, etc. I always tell 'em, "Sorry boys, we charge same as downtown."

Not surprised. The quality is still there in national spots, but I'm hearing more and more mediocrity on everything else I listen to, be it local TV and radio or more regional work. Most the time I'm thinking they just had someone in the company office do the VO.

Great word. It should be pushed out there.

This also reminds me of the 'record labels' that used to troll the copyright office for new submissions. I had a friend back in the late 80's tell me a story about a guy that was solicited by one of these "Get your new song on an album!!" ....mills to make you feel like you were someone now. I used to get them also from a couple of them, but they wanted you to sign a contract to allow their artists to cover your song and it would be placed on a compilation album with others like it. So you can 'hear' what it would sound like produced professionally. One guy he knew was a country writer. Got his $150 to be on the album only to find out it was a buyout for the rights. Guess what? That song went on to be pretty successful. Not a number one by any means but he began hearing it recorded by others in the business. Rip-offs do abound.

A new one today. Got a private invite on V123. Was it a spam message pitching a coach/seminar at me? Why no, no it wasn't. It was an invite to an actual gig. To read one single line. For which they'll pay all of 20 bucks. Twenty. Dollars. But at least it wasn't spam. It was a poop sandwich extraordinaire, but t'weren't no spam.
