My friend bought an apartment on Broadway at the best possible time about 15 years ago. She figures she could sell it for four or five times what she originally paid for it.

Many times over the years I gave thought to moving to Studio City in the LA area. I would hate commuting in LA and Studio City is closest to most of the action I'd be interested in. But the rents! Holy crap. More than double what I was used to for half the space.
And NYC? Fuggedaboudit.

NYC pals went to a museum exhibit that looked at the cramped quarters of 1900s immigrants to NY. Their reaction? "I wish we had that much room!"

... because The City is The City. Those that couldn't afford The City have made Brooklyn just as expensive. The Bronx is not for the faint-hearted. Queens is a dormitory, almost as expensive and has no character whatsoever. Staten Island should be fumigated and given to New Jersey... and if you're considering New Jersey, then you may as well be where I am on Long Island.
Yes... I'm one of those that would love to be in The City... unfortunately, the other boroughs just don't cut it. They are, collectively, "not-Manhattan" and you're destined to become one of the reviled "bridge & tunnel" crowd.

Anyone that moves to Manhattan on a modest income, spends more than 50% of their income on housing, and has to live there because they fear being reviled or mocked should seriously have their head examined.
I lived in Brooklyn in the early 80s and I don't recall any mocking coming my way. I was happy to be able to pursue my career in THE CITY, even though it was a number 7 train ride away..also, autos were allowed in Manhattan back then from what I recall

Well, there's "character" and then there's "character." As someone who lived there ten years, I can say Queens certainly has it. Whether it's what you want... is another story.

Most of the desirable neighborhoods in Brooklyn now are just as expensive as Manhattan (and sometimes more). But you can still get more space for the money in Brooklyn. It's still absurdly expensive compared to almost everywhere else, and I question my sanity on a daily basis. Not because I live in Brooklyn though

As for Todd's point... I totally get it. To me, living in the urban sprawl around the place you really want to be is neither fish nor fowl. OK... it's good to be able to get in relatively quickly, but the cost of living out here on Long Island is high, and I find myself either wanting to go into the city (where I could probably live in a small apartment for the cost of my current house)... of just heading out for the hills (or desert) where money goes a lot further and the lifestyle is totally different. Give me a good internet pipe and I'd make it work.

there's a pulse/heartbeat in NYC like no where else.. Being in the midst of so much opportunity, can't help one strive to be at the top of their game... I still believe that one on one personal networking is a vital part of any VO's career.. a life in NYC takes that to the Nth degree, so many contacts crammed into a small geographic area.. not to mention, artistically being bombarded by all the sights and sounds, constantly evolving, right in front of you..
Everyone is different, but I thrive in an environment where I feel challenged and pushed on a daily basis.. As an entrepreneur, especially a VO entrepreneur, I have a tendency to get a little too comfortable
