The documentary all about voice acting, featuring some of the bright lights of the business has been available for a while for free. This I learn after shelling out 5 bucks to watch it on Netflix the other day. The difference is the Netflix version is clean and HD, and the YouTube version is on the grainy side, but the audio is still good.

It's really good for voice acting wannabes to watch. It's quite clear about the challenges to making it in this line of work.

This really is a good film - it is organized well - it sticks with the cartoon genre - yet it touches on so many of the issues faced by those of us who do not live in LA and work in animation. The realities of a free lance job. The importance of understanding who you are. Loved Bob's deconstruction of Porky Pig's speech pattern.

I've watched the film several times now. Its one of the things I give new people to watch when they ask about getting into the business.

In the film, James Arnold Taylor (current voice of Fred Flintstone) mentions that when he was growing up, he saw a Bugs Bunny cartoon where Daffy Duck dresses up like Bugs and Bugs dresses up like Daffy. In that cartoon, Mel Blanc not only does the voices of the characters, but does the characters doing an impression of each other. So it's Mel doing an impression of Bugs doing an impression of Daffy, and Mel doing an impression of Daffy, doing an impression of Bugs - and he was able to keep this all straight in his head and have the voices sound similar, yet completely different.

I remember seeing this as a kid, but didn't fully appreciate the amount of crazy voice acting skill involved until I started doing voiceover.

Here's the cartoon that was mentioned. The multi-character bit starts around 3:40

More of an "acting" acting example rather than a voice acting example, but one of the things that makes Orphan Black one of my favourite shows on TV right now is Tatiana Maslany doing the same sort of thing whenever she plays one of her multiple characters impersonating another of her characters.

Question for a Voice Actor.

"What's a Wombat?"

"It's essentially a tool for playing the game of Wom. The bat in itself is merely part of the whole.

Now, lots of people tell me that they, themselves, personally have their own bats and proceed to randomly swing their arms like Joe DiMaggio. I think it was Checkov who said - Faith is an aptitude of the spirit. It is, in fact, a talent: you must be born with it - So it is also with your, personal bat and the unity of the Gestaltness of Wom. With talent and training your inner bat can strike out at the externally delivered Wom."
