There was a thread before talking about the V5. I found one for a pretty good price, and was considering the M5 before. Has anyone tried the V5 yet to see if it is comparable to the M5 as far as the preamp goes? |

Interesting quote from that GS piece:
"I would say that the V5 preamp sound signature is more on the warm and thick sounding side; it also has a not too focused nor too open sound, and is very well balanced, with all frequencies well represented across the whole spectrum. Low-end is solid and controlled; mid-range and high-end are sweet and round, without any traces of harshness, velvety I'd say. It definitely has character, without being too colored. It has an overall very pleasing sound signature that is kind of a compromise between “colored” and “transparent” signatures."
Apparently, it will add some color/character. Something on the order of a tube sound. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

Ya, I read that, but there was only one person who had actually used the unit, and they didn't have M5 experience (it sounded like) to make a comparison. I am just curious about how the pres compare. Did Avalon throw a preamp in the U5 to make the V5 or did they add DI features to the M5? The V5 and M5 are identical pres with different configurations, that would be cool. If the M5 is a superior present, then I'd just keep saving. I guess I could just get both and take em back. I was just hoping someone had already compared. |

As an M5 user, I can say that there's no coloration with that pre. What comes in, goes out. Just louder. The only audible change you can make is a high pass filter. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

Hmmm...interesting. I wonder if that review was using the "filter" or if it was just the preamp clean. |

All the high-pass filter does, is eliminate mostly subsonic freqs. Rumble, etc. It it won't change the character or sound of the pre. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

The V5 actually has some tone shaping as well as the hipass filter. I'm just curious if the guy who reviewed it was using just the pre or if he was using the other options. |
