Back in the mid 1960s, Richard King was the afternoon personality announcer on WLW in Cincinnati. (700 Khz.) Rich had a whole Santa Claus bag full of wierd stuff he would do over and over like that. As many of you know, Cincinnati had a very large German population and Rich never missed a chance to bounce humor off that fact. EVERY DAY, EVERY DAY sometime during Rich's program, you would be jarred loose with the sounds of an electronic organ, much like you might hear in your neighborhood funeral home. And poking humor at the small town vehicle of that era in which the local radio station would get a local funeral home to sponsore a reading from the Bible each day, Rich would come on with that sanctimonious sound of an older announcer who had spent too much time studying the style of the small town pastor: "And now, STEIGERWALD FUNERAL HOME, with SIX convenient Carry-in locations, presents readings from the Greater Cincinnati White Pages:
Gerwitz, Walter E..... and he would always go on about 10 or 15 seconds longer that good taste demanded as a stopping point, and EVERY NAME he read would be a tongue-twisting guttural sounding German name.
Mike Rose's presentation was SMOOTH. Rich King did it with splinters and sour kraut! |
