VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

8i6, specifically. Anybody else find that its preamp imparts a bit of unwanted crunchiness to mics attached to channel one, regardless of where you've set the gain? This has been the case for me with two vastly different mics. Have been fighting with the sound quite a lot lately, and thought it was me or my mouth failing, and then, after every conceivable adjustment, tried an outboard preamp instead, and... everything goes nice and smooth.

That depresses me. This other preamp is of far lesser quality than the Focusrite one should be, and it's just not supposed to be this way. I'm wayyyy out of warranty and I don't wanna be that customer who whines and moans but golly gee.

I do treat my stuff with great care, so I don't think *I've* blown it up.

I have always assumed and suspected that most people have a hard time being objective in hearing their own voice. (Maybe the key to being good at Voice-Over is to not suffer from this shortcoming! )

Before you throw up your hands and declare failure, get someone else to talk into your mic with various pre-amps hooked up. See if it makes THEIR voice crunchy! (Who knows. You might realize that "crunchy" sounds good!) If not, then look for a new preamp/converter.

Post a recording of your crunchy and non-crunchy reads. See what other people hear. (SPOILER ALERT INSTRUCTIONS: Do not explain about crunchy, and which one is crunchy when you post. If WE hear it, we will tell you.
