Client perception is everything - Opinions of the VO glitterati mean nada.

Read the blogs n post n facetubes n twerps of the great and good in our world. Go back and REALLY read them. NOW, go back add really, really read them and really Really REALLY understand them. AWESOME eh?

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO ....NO!

Here am the rules. You approve of me and I approve of you and we approve of them. I'm awesome, you're awesome and THEY are awesome!

Here's what the average person with money to pay you for a VO job thinks. It is best expressed by stealing a line from the 1990 movie Pretty Woman.

"You make $100 an hour and you have a safety pin holding your boot up? "

I was going to say you remind me of a guru - barefooted, wearing saffron robes, holding court with a gaggle of followers waiting patiently for your every word...

But in hindsight, I see you more like Brando's Colonel Kurtz - holed up in the jungle, surrounded by savages... the remains of gutted reel-to-reel machines strewn about the woven grass floored hut...slipping out of the shadows only long enough to wipe the sweat from the top of your shaved head as you dole out sage, yet superficially ambiguous nuggets of wisdom.

You forgot about Jazz and Bess, not to mention the trumpet.

I think Phillip has been watching too much "Pretty Woman".

And then, there's:

Yonie,

I believe that's actually a flugelhorn.

Not so long ago when I started in this business, I used to seek out the words of the wise old sages. I suffered from the same issues that a lot of newcomers have. I actually thought that these people knew better than me and that I could benefit from reading what they had to say.

It didn't take long for me to realize that most of them were just playing the social media game and either actually a) believed their own hype, b) needed the attention because of their own insecurities, c) were being manipulative and trying to turn their pontifications into a revenue stream.

All that didn't last long (my bs detector is a well-oiled and meticulously maintained machine)... and I soon sorted out the wheat from the chaff.

... and even when you sort out who is worth listening to, not everything they say is right for you. I mean, I even allow myself the luxury of disagreeing with Philip once in a while Smile

... this one is a gem though. We get wrapped up and waste time in the awesomeness of what we do and the fact that everyone we know "rocks". Yay us! It's fun, we get to play and slap each other on the back and have a communal ego massage... and there's a place for that. But keep it in perspective.

No there aren't so sorry about that. Except for CourVo of course. Yer man has written a book about this voice over class of thing and sure y'don't write a book if you're some powerful class o'eejit!

Pausing is where the big money is. Today, my entire day has been one long pause. Masterful or unnecessarily agonising for the woman in the corner shop? I was after a loaf of bread and it took me four hours ...Genius!
