Spotted this one too Rob. I remember Neumann reissued a limited run of the u67 in the nineties and I missed the boat that time. I'm dithering like hell on this one. The FET version was widely in used as a v/o mic in London in the 70's/80's. I'll never forget my first session at Angell Sound around 1985 - it was on that same mic and I seem to have been chasing that sound ever since.
One thing I'm not very clear about: is this a limited run like the U67 made with NOS parts? Or has it gone back into full production? I've heard rumours that it's limited to 100, someone else said it was 1000, the Neumann website doesn't mention numbers as far as I can see.
In case anyone is not aware, the u47 FET is not the same mic or sound as the legendary tube version. Music studios like it for recording kick drums. My memory is telling me it was an excellent mic for spoken word, though time can play tricks.... _________________ Colin Day - UK Voiceover

I'm thinking that most of the studios will be keeping their U87s, so for practical purposes I'm inclined to just bypass this opportunity, along with the fact that even after selling my 87 I would still have to pony up another $1500. |

This mic is a no-brainer and will change your career forever...
Actually, what I meant to say is, if you are a total gear slut (you know who you are) with deep pockets, get it. Otherwise get the same sound for 1/10 the price elsewhere... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

You could build an exact replica (minus the actual body) for like $600 and some time.
On a side note...has anyone used an sE Gemini II in their studio? |

One guy I just met at AES:

He's knocking off all the classics for cheap.
Otherwise, Lawson L47fet., but still $1000.
But if you ask a TRUE enginerd, they'll say no mic sounds anything like a U47 fet. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Quite curious. Their 47Fet with the clone capsule is less than $400 and the tube version with the clone capsule and transformer is less than $1000. I'm going to have them do some raw speech samples for me of the 47, the 47fet and their 87. Interested in how they sound. These are more attractive (from a purely data standpoint) than modded mics, since they are 100% builds and not capsule and component swaps on cheap Chinese mics. I will report back in a couple days. |

Right on George. No clone mic sounds just like a "whatever" mic" Many clones have similar characteristics, many do not.
Note: I respect Dave Thomas but his reputation precedes him. His CM-87 is not even close to a real Classic U87 or even and AI. And, customer service was less than stellar for a very long time. I do not know if he has cleaned up his act or not, but I would be cautious. VERY cautious.

You're right about the CM87. Have heard it on spoken word and liked the sound of it....but it doesn't really sound like a U87. |

It's here. Quieter than I expected. Got that signature Neumann mid-range hook in abundance. And it sounds lovely. Is it a keeper? Too soon too tell but there's a couple of sound files here:

They are very quick and dirty - not even a pop shield and who knows if I'm working it right - literally hot off the press! _________________ Colin Day - UK Voiceover

Sounds good. How does it compare to your Brauner? |

Well, I won't write "keep your day job", but you already knew that...
First, love the Burl (I am jealous, mine got stolen), moving them mic is going to make the U47 sound sweet. You will find the sweet spot soon.
Although not as smooth as the tube version, this FET is not bad. I am a little impressed as to how it handles your voice. The overall sound is not as solid in the lows; as I expected, but well rounded.
Will the U47 Anniversary FET microphone be a keeper? Only time will tell.
