The pencil and the Iranian Double Pause changed my life.

Interesting to note that the two things most successful voiceoverists have in common are having Type II diabetes and not having Type II diabetes.

I warm up with a pen like a bit of a horse bridle when I am plagued by a sloppy "S".

I have no idea why it happens or what the mechanical change is in my mouth that causes the sound.
I just know the pen work-out works for me!

Okay, in all seriousness - I'm working toward putting together some reasonably good equipment - mic, monitors, acoustic treatment...then I may be able to more accurately judge just what I sound like.

If you still have the eBook (audiobook available upon request with a small fee) then you already know a good mic is a big help in taming sibilants. Even with Chinese capsules you will find microphone placement is more important than the actual microphone.

So a few questions are in order here:
A) What microphone are you using now? You did not mention the mic or the chain for you recording set-up in your original post.
cool What interface are you using now?
C) Are you able to give a sample of the issue so we may hear where the problem is strongest?
D) Has anything changed since your original post?
E) Where does this issue pop up more often in your recordings (i,e.: what style is the issue more prevalent)?

And, there are so many mroe, but these will give the folks on the VO-BB a good start at offering some suggestions as to how you may proceed.

Hey Frank,

Back (years back) when I started this thread, I thought I'd have the equipment to start recording soon enough. That never happened and it still hasn't - though I may be in a position soon to acquire it - so thus far, I have no mic (save a speakerphone), no interface (just the onboard soundcard) and no speakers (save for the speakerphone, which is also my sole, mono speaker).

I'm leaning toward a good condenser mic (CAD E100S), a USB interface (something from Scarlett or Steinberg) and Yamaha HS5 speakers...along with who knows what kind of acoustic treatment)...but that's all still to come. I think it would be best if I waited 'til I were better set up to record something, because who knows just how bad my "microphone" and untreated room make things sound.

I think the issue when I talk is that if I'm trying to deliver words strongly, I overemphasize "t"s and "s"s (when what it is that I think I want to do is make the rest of my voice fuller - except I end up trying to say words with a strong "attack" that sounds sibilant to my ears.

Cheers

ha! I won't go into detail about phones, but what you are hearing is basically coming from that "microphone".

When you get set-up and are able to post files then we can discuss this further.

Sounds good to me - or hopefully will sound good to me, eventually. Wink
