Us meaning voice actors.
Has anyone seen any numbers or demographics on how many working voice talents are out there?
I've checked the department of labor, but the closest one can generally get is 'Actor'.
I haven't seen any specifics, anyone else? _________________ Pax vobiscum

That is really a "how long is a piece of string" question. You have to define "voice actor". Some of the P2P sites would define it as anyone on their roster (be they getting hundreds of jobs per year or a big fat zero). Do you mean full-time? (with VO as their only source of income). Do you mean part-time? (which can often involve earning more than a full-timer).
There is no definitive answer. If you include all the aspiring voices on the P2P rosters or those that are chalking up one gig per year (their cousin's company phone message), then you're well up into the hundreds of thousands (if not more). If you're restricting it to those that are full-time or pulling in at least $25K part-time, probably far, far less (by orders of magnitude). _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

The Voice Over Professionals Group on LinkedIn has more than 14,000 members. I would guess that around 10,000 of those have represented themselves as working voiceoverists, but as Bish says, that could be people who have done one *RUSH* job on Voices.com for (net) $90.91 or people who actually earn a living at it.
I would guess there are hundreds of thousands of us because, after all, it's just talking. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

There are absolutely hundreds of thousands of people talking...probably right now in fact. I don't know that there really can be an answer. Too many variables. |

Despite claims earlier in this thread that specific numbers are impossible to come by, I can give you an exact, definitive answer to your question:
A shitload. Maybe two.

To wonder how many are into voice overs is one thing. To wonder how many are competing with you at your level is another. I arrange voiceoverist into 5 distinct levels.

I admire the modesty and endorse my position in the grand scheme of things.
In the world of Voiceoverists there are far too many to be taken seriously and far too few to worry about.
To be part of the global elite, the top 1% of income earners in the world, not just as voiceoverists, you need an after tax annual income of $34,000.
How are you doing so far? To be in the top 1% of earners in the world of voiceoverists, $25,000 per year in fee income will get you there.
To make a living as a VO, you do not need a plan, a talent, a coach or anything mundane like the aforementioned, you simply need a miracle. In Philip's realm, September billing was $33,500. Awesome talent? No ... A miracle.
How many? 99% think they are but they aren't. 1% "are" and about 1% of the 1% know in their hearts that magic and miracles exist.
If gentleness, kindness, understanding, love and above all humility are not at the core of who you are then magic and miracles will never manifest themselves in your lives for long enough to make a real difference. |
