Hopefully you're reading this because you want to read it and that the subject line put the rest off.
Yesterday in a fun way I was reminded why I should not and do not sell my soul. Voice work is my work, my job, it's how I make a living, the way I pay the bills and fund "the stuff of life". Voice work does not define me, is not my world but it has brought many wonderful things into my life, best of all, you. I want you in my world above all else.
Any way, back to the plot. October 31st and my target for the month was not going to happen. Had I been really wide of the mark I would've shrugged my shoulders and moved on, but I wasn't, I was $438 short. Friday 31st was simply a quiet day, such days come along. I looked at the state of my business account and a number caught my eye. It was a lot. A TV commercial I did about a year ago was going to be shown somewhere else, the money was from my agent to reflect the value of this new market. Hoorah, target hit and then some, a lot of some. I did it thanks to "residuals". They're not big or clever, they are there to ensure you are paid properly for your work.
Ask the average person whether they would prefer $1million once or $100,000 a year for life, most will go for the million. It makes no real sense.
Ask a voiceoverist the same question and they'll go for $250 because "you never know what it may lead to dood!"
What disaster occurred last week to leave me short of my target? I turned down 2 jobs. Both approaches were from really nice people. Both wanted a lot for not very much money AND one was a competitor of a client who has been using me for over 20 years. They treated "no" as if it were a negotiating ploy. In my world "no" means ...NO.
Ignore Union/Non Union, it's a distraction. There are people who want to use you and pay you properly and there are those who don't. |

Philip, I see you take no days off in sharing words of wisdom.
I erred on the side of caution on a couple of "sell your soul" moments last month...I'm glad I did. It helps me sleep soundly at night.
And Karyn OBryant, your signature made me burst out into laughter. I believe only a VO can fully and truly appreciate that statement. _________________ Freedom is not knowing your limits but realizing that you have none. |

Is the average person who expects to live more than ten years really that stupid? Well, I guess that explains who's been writing so much of the copy I'm given to read. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
