VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

Hi my long lost VO.BB pals,
Haven't been visiting much lately but...I'm back!

So I have a pair of Audio Technica M30s. They are fine, get the job done, though I'm not getting sound thru one ear right now, which is a bit of a problem Wink

I use my headphones for monitoring/editing so I need a new pair now...I tried to search the archives and came up with a few possibilities. I'd like to keep it under $100 so maybe the Sony 7506's? Or I could go AT again but maybe upgrade to the M50s which seem to get better reviews. I am not a technophile but any stretch so just need a good solid pair for VO.

Recs?

I don't think you can go wrong with the Sony MDR 7506 (or MDR V6). They are universally used in studios , large and small, and have been for many years.

They're comfortable, decent build quality, and they sound really good. Audiophile quality...? Not really. But we don't need that.

Another BIG plus is when the ear pads need to be replaced, the aftermarket variety can be purchased very inexpensively.

I have three 7506's . Studio, editing desk, and travel. Love 'em.

Yep, those are good headphones. I personally am using KRK KNS-6400 headphones right now. I think they are a hair more true than the 7506s, which I thought were a bit heavy in the bass side. Just a little though. There is a reason the 7506s are standard. They sound great, they are accurate, they are comfortable and they have a great price.

7506's lose the bass response very quickly as the ear pads wear out, I've compared a few pairs or varying age from around the radio station and was blown away how different they sounded. Maybe all cans do, I don't really know.

I've liked them because they are very comfortable and relatively cheap and I don't use headphones for anything other than hearing a producer or doing radio, neither of which require accuracy or consistency. Though the 7506's have a reputation for that so maybe I'm all wet.

And yet one more 7506 user here. Bought my second pair about 6 years ago after the first pair finally wore out. First pair lasted about 20 years.

Another 7506 user here. The ear pads are easy to replace and B&N Photo in NY has a generic replacement that's dirt cheap.

Yup, the Sony's are well regarded.
Yup, they're a bit bassy.
Yup, the thin leather ear pad covers wear out a lot.

But "a lot" comes from someone who wears them at least 20 hours a week on average and who thinks replacing them every year or two is too much. YMMV.

Don't laugh at me, but my wife surprised me with Sennheiser's PX-360 for portable use. They're very lightweight, small, and - to my ears - have a pretty flat sound that's not at all fatiguing for long periods of use. I've bashed them around a fair bit and they are pretty sturdy, too. My only complaint is that the cord is thin (I like a beefier cord, like that on my [ don't laugh at this, either ] MDR-V600, which ain't quite as cool as the 7506, perhaps, but I love them anyway).

The PX-360 falls in the $100 or so range.

...unless you like a really heavy set, like a concrete headband, then try the Koss pro 4 aa...

My Sony's only had to be shelved because they are, literally, disintegrating. I bought them in 1996. They have had speakers replaced, I had to do some reworking of the structure (they no longer swivel, really), and are generally held together by Rush stickers (you get weird looks from some people when they see a naked dude on a big red star on the side of your head). They took a beating - I would take them off, set them on the counter, then get down off the stool and catch my foot in the cord, at which time they'd slam right into the floor. Always in a hurry to smoke or potty, this would usually happen at least once a day.

Sorry for being the dick this time, but how many "headphone recommendation" threads do we really need? Wink

(FWIW, I'm one of the few non-7506 users; I've been using Sennheiser HD25's for the last 15 years.)

No need to be a dick, Jacob. After a quick search of the archives, this headphone recommendation request only comes up about once a year or even less often. I think that's fair for a GEAR forum.

Now the results are quite repetitive with the vast majority of recommenders touting the Sony brand.
