Hey all!

I have been getting VO work for about 10 years now, but not on purpose! Smile

I would like to now actually pursue VO work, and am putting together a VO Demo on Tuesday. A studio that I do VO work with every week is allowing me to borrow the studio and tech to make it happen.

So, the question is, what should I put on it? Where can I find GOOD copy to read?

I am in the Rocky Mountain region, and do alot of HOST or Commercial (Call Ash&Booth today at 555-1222 for your free consultation, etc). Any suggestions???

Thanks!
Bill

Everywhere.

For commercial copy: all media. TV, Radio, the internet, billboards.

Industrial/corporate: Try going to a company's website; many will have mission statements or technical info about their products, which often makes for good narration copy.

Bill,

It looks like you are in the Denver region, correct?

Scan through the archives and there are several (hundred) posts here on just this subject. That would be the fist place to look.

As far as I can tell by your site, you must be represented by an agent... ask them for copy - and quite possibly some direction in your quest, he/she/they may prove invaluable.

Welcome to the VO-BB

One great source for excellent copy is magazine ads.
Professional copywriters and all that.

Be sure to eyeball those great concept ads and tweak them if necessary for the ear.

I'm just a bit tired at the moment, but I need some clarification.
Have you been getting (actually doing) VO work for 10 years?
Are you already doing alot of HOST or commercial (stuff) at the present time?
If you're looking for demo material, do you have access to any recordings you have done in the past few years? If this is not the case (I'm way off), then I would raise my glass to all of the previous posts above. Commercial copy is literally everywhere... whether it's audio or written.

Yeah, I have been fortunate to book a lot of VO work over the past 10 years (while being a fulltime actor). But now, I want to actually go out and FIND VO work, and that will take a demo. So, you are right on! Smile

I am not going to use the actual recordings of previous work, but will be redoing everything on Tuesday. Wanted to get some GOOOOD stuff on there.

Bill,

The following pieces of advice may sound incredibly nit-picky, and there are VOs who've had success while roundly ignoring them. That said, you may want to rethink a couple of things:

1) I tried to download your demo to listen to it. Problem is, it's in WAV format, and as such takes significantly longer to download than an mp3. Convert it to the latter format, at 128kbps; the sound quality will be virtually the same for most listeners, who as an added bonus won't be impatiently drumming their fingers waiting to hear you.

2) Purely subjective but shared among many pro VO talents is this: A website to promote your VO services should focus only on your VO work, and not other areas; best to have separate sites for the acting, modeling, spokesperson, etc. Among buyers of VO talent, showing off too many specialties can leave a "jack of all trades, master of none" aftertaste, and tends to be more of a distraction than anything else.

Again, just my $0.02 and meant constructively.

Thanks! I will change the format to MP3 first thing in the morning.

As for the second point (still very much appreciated!), I am known in town as a jack of all trades, master of none... so its perfect! lol. Maybe if the VO work becomes more "professional" for me, I will make a single site for it.

There are two main commercial production companies in town, and I work with them on TV, Film, print, and now VO, so the multi site is pretty common.

Really really appreciate the advice though.

Thanks DB!

Bill... I was able to download and listen to your VO demo from your website. I will reserve any comments about the demo after you place it in the Critique forum. That usually works out better, so we don't have demo's scattered all over the VO-BB.
