You yanks have clearly been keeping this treasure all to yourselves for too many decades! I literally stumbled on the work of Ken Nordine this morning and, while the whole beat poet thing usually leaves me rather cold, I'm so drawn in by this guy's majestic voice and delivery....

And to think he's 90 years young and still working! I'm not sure if his work has had an audience here in the UK, but he's got a new fan here for sure.

What do we know about Ken Nordine? Please share.

That was interesting. Certainly worth a listen.

But... it the pursuit of fairness, for every Brit that listens to Ken Nordine for the fist time, an American must listen to John Cooper Clarke.

Hey Colin
Ken is an icon of spoken word.
Cool Deep Perception is a little tribute I did to him and Rod Serling several years ago.
The first set of dialog is from Ken's album Upper Limbo liner notes. The second dialog is my tribute to Rod. I think now it actually sounds more like Laurence Fishburne.

I was cast in a set of furniture store pieces a few years back by one of Portlandia's staff to do a Ken Nordine type delivery that was pretty fun.

Ken follows the lines of Kerouac, Woody Guthrie, The Grateful Dead and is one the iconic Beat Poets of the 50's

Eons ago, during my radio daze, I used to fill in across town at a certain nonprofit... One of the Pacifica stations.

Ken used to drop in occasionally, and regale us with his stories... And his "word jazz", as he called it. Some of the best late nights I ever had.

Some of you may remember these...

Ken left an indelible impression that persists to this day.

"Stare With Your Ears"
Only Ken Nordine could get away with using a phrase like that!

My favorite Ken Nordine video just happens to be about my home town:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0xT7QC0IHQ

Sadly, much of what is featured in that video no longer exists, or is greatly diminished. (The featured Midtown Plaza was demolished in 2007, but the clock was saved & is now at the Rochester airport)

you might also want to read Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassidy if you like Ken.

I must say I am once again inspired to interpret copy and tell the stories the way I feel them.
