Hey all. Philip has heard this one, but I thought I'd share some vo (non) news with you, which typifies what we do!
So a couple of weeks ago on a Friday I get a call from a girl from a production company saying that she'd like me to demo some character stuff, but not the norm; she wants me to give her nonsensical language sounds, like The Minions in Despicable Me or Pingu the Penguin. Sounds that could be perceived as a language, but doesn't actually make any sense! I hopped into the booth and gave her a few options, which she said she loved. It was to be playing ice-cream scoops! I thought nothing more of it.
The following Monday I get an email from another production company saying they loved what they heard and they'll be in touch...
On Tuesdays I teach drums, so I went in as normal. That morning I spoke to a girl who explained that my demo had been passed on to her and wanted to know my BSF and if I'd voiced for any similar ice-cream brands etc. She explained that they were in a rush for this one, that they want me for a session today, that it was for Walls and was I free? I just thought it was for an internal presentation, but no... it was for a worldwide tv campaign!!
She explained that it would involve international usage as per usefee.tv and that for starters we'd be looking at the whole of the UK, Brazil (BSF x 500%) and Sweden (x200%). To quote Withnail & I, "my heart started beating like a fucked clock!!" She asked my availability and said that it needed to be done today and was I free at 4? I told her that I'd be there and would get out of what I had to do, so just let me know. She said that she had a final meeting and would contact me with the studio name in Golden Square in the middle of London and the session time. I carried on teaching with a grin like a Cheshire fucking cat!! I was thinking "family car! We're getting a new family car!!!"
An hour later I get an email:
Hello
The decision is to stick with a guy we have used before sorry. – we are trying a new way of approaching the script so its a bit of a weird one. You may well get a call form me about the next round. Thanks anyway and keep in touch.
Wonderful!! I knew I shouldn't have got my hopes up. So close. So very very close: They told me they were in a hurry and I was just waiting for the bloody session time and studio address!
So... the moral of the story: Never believe anything ever again, until you're at the studio door with a bloody script in your hand!! So there you go, that was todays (non) vo news... and now here's Lucy with the weather... _________________ https://www.darrenaltman.com/

That's the "Mother of all last minute - having the rug pulled out from under my feet" disappointments.
Hope and pray that they do contact you later for something even better - that really works out! _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

When something like this falls through, it just means there is something even better coming your way. |

Auggh. I think there's a special place in purgatory for people who cover their own ass with the hopes of others.
They'll have 5 years of watching TV ads with children's choruses providing the audio.
In my experience, when something like this falls through, "something better" is not on the way. It means this beast fell through and it's crap.
March on. Be willing, but be wary.
—but do let us know if you win the lottery or something like that. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Sort of like when your little daughter is told she's going to appear in a film starring the late Robin Williams. She tells her classmates. Then, at the last minute, the director calls and says she's "too pretty" for the part.
Yes...
Sometimes... life can SUCK.
But, hey, that's "Show Biz." _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |
