An email came in from a visitor to my website:

"Hello, sir. I like your voice. I am Waseem from Afghanistan." (his ip address confirms that).

Do I reply, thanking him and asking if I can help with anything... or what?

I would make a short, polite reply.
"Thank you for your kind words!"

One doesn't get fan mail very often here in the tertiary trenches.

I'm with Deebs. Sounds like he's not necessarily adept at this interwebz thing.

But he did pay you a compliment. Do the nice thing and be gracious.

If he has more to say, I'm sure he will.

Thanks, Deirdre and Don.

He's actually from Pakistan; not that it matters. His compliment was the reason I did want to reply, but my uncertainty was because I don't know whether the conflict in that part of the world has a bearing on who business people should or should not communicate with.

I do tend to over-think things. And this may be one of them. Mello

Thanks again.

I think you can talk to anybody you want; *doing business* with people in certain countries is prohibited; the US State Department has a list of "no touchie" countries. I occasionally have need to consult that list if we get a request for educational materials or to work on a project from certain countries. It doesn't happen very often, but it does happen.

That being said, I have gotten a few emails from people in Iran who have one of my astronomy books and they have questions, so they write and ask them. They are always perfectly polite, their questions are good, and their English usually is pretty decent.

I answer. So far, I think DHS or whoever it is that spies on our emails hasn't said anything. Maybe they're learning a little astronomy. Wink
